Kind of got the 112 bug a couple of months ago and have been picking up a few here and there. This latest one looks like a 3 dot, Catergory IV, Version 1 except the two dots are on the wrong side. Maybe it's a 2 dot Catergory III Version 4 that just has a pit or something next to the left dot? If you take the point of a knife or a pin it catches in all three "dots" so I'm not sure what I have. Any ideas?

Also do you folks think Buck could do a spa treatment on this? Maybe just a buff and a new edge on the blade? TIA

I was watching that one ;) and had similar thoughts looking at the pics...
I have sent some in to Buck before with similar bolster dings (sent for new blades)...
I think you will be pleasantly surprised if you get it a 'spa treatment

For $12 I'm pretty happy with it. Regardless of what it really is it's still a Buck 112. I just wish folks would quit using them for a hammer. I mean, do they in turn use their hammer as a knife?

What's the old quote? "All tools are hammers. Except for chisels. They're screwdrivers."

I agree with you on this Bad;& although my very first 112 looked much like this one:o it got that way because in the Coast Guard while working as a deck hand often times I wouldn't have a sailmakers palm handy and would use the bolsters to push a sail needle through a piece of line when making a whipping on the cut end...My
Sail needle was always handy stuck in my hat visor, and my 112 was always at my side:) so I now get a lot of these and make 'em look new again :) And I also on more than one occasion would use the rear bolster on a small marlin spike to coerce a stubborn shackle:o. So there....I have come clean on this......

Boatswains Mate?

Extra dot on the LEFT (edit) must be a ding.

Knife certainly took enough of a beating to have gotten one there on the blade.

Rockwell tests are supposed to be done lower down and out of sight.

Buck will make it beautiful for $6.95. They'll ship it back free.

the far left dot doesn't look as neat as the other two...
I really like the scales on your knife, and it appears to have a full blade...
nice score:thumbup:

Tried a magnifying glass and then blew up the photo. It's almost in the right spot, (wrong side of Buck though) but it's more like a pit then a dot. If you look closely at the B in Buck you can see two, similar looking dots/pits.

I too am pretty pleased with the scales and the blade still has most of the factor finish to it. Hasn't been sharpened much and hasn't been next to a bench grinder which is always a plus. There is a little bit of play and when the blade is about halfway open it has a little wiggle to it. Perhaps I'll email Joe some pics or PM him this thead and see if he thinks they can work it over without too much trouble.

Are you talking side to side play, or fore and aft movement without much tension from the lock bar/spring...IIRC the tang radius was changed at a later date than this one...

I've purchased 3 new production (2011) Buck 112' over the last month, and on all of them the blade can be wiggled from side to side when the knife is closed. The all lock up without any movement when open.
