Hey all,

I am looking to pick up a hunting knife for field dressing and butchering of wild pigs, it might also be used for some light camp duty or other game. I haven't decided on what to pick yet, but some of the ones that I have been considering are the Buck 102, 105, 119, Old Timer 150T and a few others. I decided the other day to check out the fixed blade knives from CASE and see if they were a possibility. I went to their site and checked 'em out. I thought they were great looking knives. I am referring to the leather handled ones.

So then I started to think whether they would make a good knife for what I was wanting to use them for. So I thought I would come and ask the knowledgeable resource of the Blade Forums. Who better to get the answers right?

What do you all think about these new CASE fixed blades? How do they match up with the Buck fixed blades? If given the choice which would you take, the Buck or Case? Do the CASE knives hold an edge well and are easy to resharpen? I'd like to hear your thoughts and opinions.

Also if you have a recommendation for another hunting knife I should check out I'd like to hear that as well. Just make sure they don't cost over $70 or so.

Thanks for your time and help.

I have read from a number of sources that Case's Tru-Sharp stainless is actually 420HC, which is the same steel Buck uses in most of their knives. The general consensus is that BUck does a better job with this steel than anyone else.

My recommendation for a hunting knife at any price point less than a $200 Dozier is always the same: get a Beretta Loveless Dropped Point Hunter with the zytel handle. You can get one for less than $40 if you look around online. The steel is AUS8, which is OK but not great in the grand scheme of things, but you will never find it better used than in this knife. They are actually made for Beretta by Moki, who is one of the best and most underrated makers of OEM knives you can find.

I love mine so much that when it was stolen I bought three replacements just in case!

I have owned a few of the Case leather handle fixed blades and Bucks, using them both extensively in the field. The blades are slightly thinner that Buck (I think 1/8 of an inch thinner). If I had to choose I would go with the Buck 119 (or a Buck for that matter). First, because of the thicker blade. Two, the handle material is better and will last longer. Three, Buck holds an edge better. And lastly I believe the leather sheath from Buck to be greater quality than Case.
