Hi Everyone, I just bought a new stockman in Amber bone and its going back for a replacement due to a lazy master blade that won't close. It looks like the tank is a bit short as it sits lower than the sheepsfoot. I liked the overall quality but it looks like I got a bad one. How is yours? The master blade rubs against the sheepsfoot also. So how do you like your stockman? I'm debating a refund and trying something else. This one is a direct replacement for my EDC 63032 which has a just about worn out pen blade. Still walks and talks like crazy compared to the new one.

Sounds like you just got a bad one. I have a 63032 CV in Chestnut Bone that seems fine to me. However, blade rub on Case stockman patterns is pretty standard. I think all of mine have it to some extent or another. My one GEC 3-blade pattern has the same issue, so it's not limited to Case products but is typical of knives that have less than one spring per blade and use crinking of the blades to fit them in.

I like mine just fine. It was one of my most carried knives last year. I prefer the curved bolsters of the '18 pattern but I like the blades better in the '032 - regular clip versus muskrat clip, and pen versus spey. I have a couple of '18s and carried one of them a lot too, so it's a mild preference, not a strong one.

Here are a couple of pics of mine. Not the best photos, I'll admit.

I don't mind a little blade rub on a knife that I plan to carry and use. It's going to get scratched and scuffed up anyway, and the patina on CV knives tends to make it less noticeable. As long as it doesn't interfere with opening and closing the knife, which it sounds like yours does.

Thanks for the replies. My old one has blade rub also, so I'm not worried so much about that. I do like tight blades and a good walk and talk though. I'll do a swap then. They said they would hand pick one for me. I'll post up some pics when I get the new one.

I've got two of them, one in Amber Bone and one in Stag Bone, they're both perfect.

Here's 2 pictures comparing the Case ( top) to a Rough Rider ( middle) and a Queen Stockman ( Bottom)

I have the same knife. Also have the blade rub, but most of my stockman do. The back springs are very weak, but they do close.

That's bad luck and I hope your replacement is up to standard. Looking forward to pix when you can.

My Chestnut Bone CASE Stockman has excellent W&T so do the Small Texas Jacks I have (which is I believe the same frame).

Thanks, Will

Here's a pic of my old one. It still walks like its smooth as glass and the talk has a most pleasant ring. Funny, I started carrying this one again after I ordered the new one and it's just like it came back to life.
Case xx 9 dot.

That's a good-looking knife with a lot of life left in it. I see your pen blade is now more like a punch.

The pen blade is actually decent to choke up on it a little with your index finger wrapped around it. Years ago I sharpened it with a concave profile in mind because I used to cut up that "grass carpet" with it.

I also have the chestnut CV 032, and it's awesome.....one of my favorite knives. Great walk and talk, great snap. It also has a little bit of blade rub, but all stockman's I've had have a little.

One thing is a little odd about it though. If you tap the knife on a hard surface, there is an odd metal vibration sound, like something is loose.

No functional issues, no loose blades, no blade play. My STJ (same frame) doesn't have the problem. Not exactly sure what it is.

Anyone every experience this?

It's the springs. The one I have now vibrates when you close the main blade. Did for years. Sounds great.

I don't mind the sound....just makes me think something is loose. But again, it feels solid in every other way.

Still one of my all time favorites.

Finally got my new Stockman. Had a runaround with the post office sending my return to a few different states. Looks like Case is doing things a bit different on this model. The main blade spring is a little shorter and not as heavy as the original. The tang sits lower than the sheepsfoot also. Still I'm very satisfied with the overall quality. They sent me a Case polishing cloth to make up for my shipping it back too. Here's some pics...

Nice! I love Case's amber bone. I never pass up an opportunity to show off my baby... :)

Sometimes what seems like a lazy spring is just excess crud between the spring and liners from the factory. It might be worth cleaning it with dish soap and flushing it with hot water, drying it and then oiling and working the blade open and closed and wiping away the dirt.

Thanks Lemmy. I shot it with some CLP. This knife is smoooooth.

good to hear! yeah i just got my ebony 15 harness hack back from GEC. It had to go in for a fix to one of the scale pins. When I opened it up the punch wouldn't close on its own strength. I was a bit annoyed and dreaded having to send it back again. I flushed it out with soapy water, compressed air and oil and its fine now. Imagine how many knives have been sent back when all that was needed was this simple fix! Ironically, I wonder if this issue actually comes about as a by product of tight gapless construction (which we all so desire). On a tight knife whatever crud does get in there i going to slow the action down quite a bit more than on a knife where there a bit more wiggle room. On the plus side though once its cleaned out its a lot harder for dust and crud to get back in on flush knife.
