I was wondering what management and the community think about sales without pictures. We have the rule "Provide as many photos as possible, in the best lighting possible." but you often see threads with:

--"Email/text for pics"
--"Can't figure out how to upload"
--"Pictures to come later"

Or just lacking them with no reason/excuse. I was wondering what everyone thought about these. In some sense it's a self-regulating rule because you'll get less interest without pictures. However, it's also a good way to hide problems and maybe scam someone as well; while having to purchase a membership greatly reduces scam listing a knife the seller doesn't actually have, it's common practice other places to have to timestamp a photo in writing to verify you really have it in possession. If you require pictures, do you also regulate number and quality? That seems to me to definitely go too far, is subjective, and be too much for moderation.

I'll throw in a poll, but I'm not sure it's right question to ask.

Not a realistic expectation. We can't even get folks to comply with the "no 'net to me' " rule; and that rule has been in place over two years.

I'm not in favor of more rules that then have to be enforced by a small moderation staff. And I don't mean me. rycen does more work in the exchanges than any of you have any idea about.

Personally, if somebody can't be bothered to learn how to post pics, then I can't be bothered to buy from him.

It baffles me. It takes far less time to upload pics here once (or elsewhere and link them) than it does to individually email them to each inquiring party. Good pictures - heck, a good sales pitch - means to me that the seller is enthusiastic and motivated to sell and make a satisfactory deal. No pictures means to me that the seller isn't motivated, doesn't much care, or is even hiding something. Very likely a hard pass by myself, and no doubt others.

There are members here who buy from a sales thread with no photos, and zero feedback from the seller . I've never wanted a knife that bad. Perhaps they they like to gamble.

This feels like a self-correcting problem to me. I have to be pretty motivated to request photos; generally I just ignore listings without them.

In principle I don't support unnecessary regulations of any free market initiatives. Let me market dictate. It is between the buyer and the seller.

While I would generally not buy from an unknown seller without pictures and some protection such as PayPal refund etc, there will always be exceptions and I would buy from someone I know, or that has a good rating and they need to sell quickly but for some reason, technical or other, they cannot get pics uploaded.
