Again, as I mentioned in the other (RAK) thread I have been looking into several of Ontario's (OKC) knives for a while.

Another of their designs that I found interesting was their Ranger/RD Tanto.
You can see an example here; http://www2.knifecenter.com/item/ON...inch-Carbon-Steel-Blade-Black-Micarta-Handles

Has anyone here owned or used one of these?
What was your opinion in general of this knife?

I cannot seem to find much info on this knife.
Seem like it's a little on the big side, and there's not a whole lot of Tanto-style blades I generally like, but this one caught my eye- what can I say. :D And I might be able to find a place for a stouter-than-normal knife, if it's worth it. Or at least that's what I've heard tantos are better for.

I'll just recycle what I said in the other thread.

Ontario overall makes great stuff. I don't have any experience with that exact knife but just looking at it; 5160 steel, full tang construction, micarta scales, and made by a reputable company; I'd say you shouldn't have to worry about quality. The overall design looks good so it should be a good blade. Jump on it if you like it.

In addition I've been looking hard at the RD9 for a while now and with the stuff I've seen guys do to it I'd say it should be pretty tough. The only thing I would be concerned with is that it's .25" thick and has a pretty low grind so I bet it's pretty steep and the edge geometry is going to be pretty thick.

I have several of the RD series knives...I have literally beaten on them like they were free and the still rock

I plan on getting a couple more just for giggles

Buy with confidence

I just ordered the RD4, any advice on sharpening? Everything I've read makes me think it's a steep angle?

My RD4 had a thick edge

take it out of the box and go out and beat on a couple 2x4's

I sharpen mine on a small belt sander I got from harbor freight for 30.00 and strop on leather...takes a good edge and holds one pretty good to

I'm not a tanto guy but I do like the RD line, as well as the Generation 2 SP knives in various sizes and styles. The 5160 steel is tough stuff and represents good bargains. Until the Ranger and Gen 2 knives came out 5160 was a custom only proposition. It's nice to see it reaching a whole new group of knife users that would never have had any experience with it until very recently.

They have already made a few Signature models in thicker stock using S7, the shock steel. Supposedly they will eventually make some others from their line in S7. A RD 7 or 9 in S7 is a nice thought. Hopefully someday. :)
