Opinions on Permanent Match?

It's a gimmick. I bought one years ago. It's a little bit lighter (needs fluid) a little bit metal match, but the whole is less than the sum of its apparent parts. It soon runs out of fluid and the flint isn't very powerful (at least on the one I have). You're much better off with a Bic lighter and a real metal match.

Bummer. It looked good. Oh well, time to go find a real metal match. Thanks for the info.

I've owned a couple of metal matches years ago. I don't know what anyone means by "real metal match", but all the ones I ever had suffered from the same problem... The fluid would evaporate eventually (usually less than a month even if never used) and the thing would be useless except to generate a little spark. I need something I can toss in a pack and be confident it will work after not having used it for a year.

A bic lighter, or my combination of ferrocium rod + tinder is more reliable. For example, the other day, I pulled out some vasiline soaked cotton balls stored in a film can that hadn't been touched in a year and the cotton fired right up when hit by a spark.

One thing I never tried was to use kerosene instead of lighter fluid in the metal match. I suppose that would still evaporate eventually, but over a much longer amount of time.

By *metal match* I meant ferrocium rod. Metal Match was the brand name of the first one I ever heard of and owned years ago.
They worked well, but one that I had packed away completely corroded into grey powder.
Thanks to suggestions from some of you, current ones are coated with colorless nail polish.
