I think I am going to order a Randall Made Model 14 with the single finger grip and forward curved double guard. Does anyone have any opinions of this blade design or configuration, or on experiences with Randall knives at all?

Stilleto, I bought two exactly as you state and they are top quality. I have not had the chance to really use them except for testing them against a bullet proof vest, that defeated a lot of my knives. The Randalls went through it like if it was butter.

The model 14 is my favorite Randall.

I decided on the stainless steel, spearpoint blade, nickel silver model #1 double hilt, border patrol handle and black sheath.

There are a lot of variations on ebay.

WOW! RGray, that is simply the coolest Randall I've ever seen! I want one!

Stilletto, if you get one with the single finger cut-out, please post a pic & a review, as that handle configuration sounds very interesting.

This one has a Bowie ground blade, but I don't like brass or wood.

RGRAY, what material is the white handle on the second knife?? Is it micarta? It looks cool.

I don't think you'll find a much better blade for the money than a Randall. True they may be a bid behind the "fashion" curve - they don't use BG-42 or G-10. However, they are great blades especially the combat related ones like the No.1 or No.14. Get one you won't be disappointed.

Funny, I just sold mine this morning. It was a 10 year old one but absolutely pristine. Mine was the Micarta with the finger grooves. It fit my hand perfectly. They are SO beautiful. It was so pristine and beautiful that I couldn't bring myself to use it so I sold it. They are great knives. Luckily I still have a model #18 and #1-8 to entertain me.

VERY GOOD KNIFE.....however, with over 18 years of knifemaking under my belt I would advise you to get the 15......same knife but a little shorter.....MUCH more practical. I copied it on one of my standard models!

Tom, that is a very good point. Size is relevant to what you will be doing. I have 20 years of knife using experience like most knife nuts. I have come to realize the need for several different sizes. As a daily carry fixed blade, it is hard to beat a 5-6 inch blade. For serious survival work and were only one blade is carried something closer to 9 inches is my option. But I find that the 7 inch blades give me the best of all worlds. They chop, not as good as bigger blades but much better than 5 inch blades, are lighter than the bigger blades have more reach than the smaller blades and can be carried concealed if need be fairly easily. I carry a Stellite Lightfoot predator with 7 inch blade regularly. The 5 incher is much easier to carry though. So, it's all a matter of the use it will get. For those who go treking in the woods, the bigger blade may be the best. For day trips a 5 inch blade may be just fine. So I guess there really isn't an ideal size oh well. I guess I need a tool belt for all my knives.

My uncle went to a military high school with Gary Randall, so I have grown up admiring his Number 1. It is just that I hear so much talk about new names in knifemaking that I wondered just how much respect a classic maker like Randall still commands.

I'm glad to hear that you guys have had the experiences you have. Thanks!

Check out the Randall Knife society forum on knifeforums. Lots of Randall information there and some that use their Randalls.

Super knife in every way, the only suggestion would be to contact Eagle Industries and order one of their sheaths for your knife if you plan on taking it to the woods for extended times. Once the leather gets wet it will stay that way for some time and even though you wipe off and dry your blade, it will do you no good if all you do is put it back into a wet sheath. Plus once you try a Eagle sheath you'll wonder why you didn't buy one before you did. They are outstanding.Enjoy your blade.
