Hey guys....I have more or less decided on not selling type of knife since it is my repro of the Helles Belle by the Master himself. I have sold one or two similar but not this close to the HB.

What are your collective opinions on reproduction of very specific designs from other makers?

I would feel that possibly a letter or a nod of approval is in order from the original? What do you think?

BTW...the knife has a forged 11" blade of 5160, triple quench and temper, and it is a whopping 3/8" thick at the guard, with a nice distal taper. Razor sharp too! Octagonal ferrule is mild steel as well as the forged guard. They are bead blasted and blued. Handle is black walnut (from a local tree) and the nameplate is heat blued. Sheath is pigskin.

If they are deceased or retired, not a problem at all. If they are still active makers and the 'tribute' was a dead ringer copy of a signature knife, I'd probably not make it to sell.

Nice job Greg..
I agree with tmickley
I can get pretty close.
I'm getting to like doing the Price Bowies
and the G woodhead Bowies I got a G woodhead all most done
for Pete The blade is thinner than the original
and the guard is thicker, when I list them on my
web site they are listed as reproductions and have My name on them.
I don't want them to be mistaken for the real the thing.
though with the original in hand I could do a very very close copy.
_ and I think that would be for me only.
I believe Bruce E is going to do the Metal sheath for it..
if anyone is interested I'll post it when done.
again Greg Nice job..

Greg, I agree with Tracy. I think if you keep this up Bill may show up on your doorstep and want his cut of the action. Im sure he is flattered though. Maybe you should add this beauty to your own collection at least untill He goes to the happy forging grounds.

Dan, yes we want to see your repro.

Bruce...this one is now my personal knife. I talked to Bill a few weeks ago and we talked out design etc....he said "if it works, it works...dont screw with it"

He is a good guy and I consider him a mentor.

It's a tough call to make obviously, but there is ample precedent for making knives in the same style of a well known maker. I don't think every guy that makes the Loveless type knife gets permission from Bob Loveless. Yet despite being widely copied, the value of original Loveless knives are not devalued.

WOW !!!, not sure what to say about the comparison...imean I wouldn't but then again....I can't not yet anyway. That is one beautiful pice you've mad, really awesome ! I'd buy it...

WOW:eek: !!!!!!
That is a fantastic reproduction. The magazines are full of Loveless and Moran copies and nobody says anything about them.To copy a makers knife is to give him a big compliment. As long as you don't bill it as a original but as a reproduction of a Bagwell Bowie I am sure that Bill wouldn't mind.In fact he might like seeing what you did with his design also.We all would be able to find allot of our knives already made either now or in the past so nothing is really a new design.Bet it looks great in your own collection.
Yes Pete I will be doing the sheath for the knife you are doing Pete.I just finished one for him myself,it is the reproduction Bowie I have posted a couple of days ago.
XRAYED--Keep up the great work, can't wait to see what is next.
Bruce
