Opinions on Szabo's designs...

I've been seeing examples of Laci Szabo's work in various knife magazines, and I wonder what other knife knuts think of them.

I have asked non-knifeknut friends of mine what they think of his designs, and showed them pictures of certain designs; the RAD, Kerambit, etc. Their reactions ususally included a wince, followed by: "What'd you use something like that for?"

So, just thought I'd ask all the fine(and knowledgeable!) people on BF to toss some opinions out.

Hi!

I really like Mr. Szabos work, awesome designs.
I think that i'd be safe to say that all his designs are meant for defensive use.
My opinion is that a lot of the designs would be great with some kali/escrima/arnis background.
Of course they could be used as utility knives too, but my understanding is that it's not the way it's supposed to be.

Laci Szabo's designs may look a little strange, but they are all purpose driven and highly funtional in real world scenarios. His background - Marine Corps, MA practitioner, and international close protection specialist - gives him the experience to develop and back up his designs. Two word summary - THEY WORK.

Laci Szabo's knives are excellent for what they are designed for. They are primarily martial arts knives and also are good for self defence.
If you are looking for a knife for that purpose then you will not find better knives IMO.

It's always neat to see the gleam in Laci's eyes as he shows you something new that he has either created or been a very active participant in creating. Either way, it always carries with it his sense of style and alot more thought than many people who are more well known, put in their designs.

He's creative, intelligent and rather funny as well.

I think his designs are some of the neatest and most effective Defensive Tools around, even though some try to characterize them as too "technique driven." Meaning, specifically for certain techniques. Specificity.

Sometimes a little specificity is very refreshing in this realm.

I knew there was something I liked about that guy. I didnt know he was a Marine. I do know he knows his way around a knife. Not that I like the style of his designs, but one can tell he knows how to use them. At the 1999 Blade show, I showed him my new big bowie from John Fitch with 10" 5160 blade, and his eyes lit up like a little kid. He then proceeds to whip the knife around in ways I never dreamed of; switching grip positions, etc.. He seemed really impressed with the knife and didnt seem too much in a hurry to give it back! I finally got the knife back though. I still have it if anyone wants me to email them a picture. Its a beaut.

Thanks for the responses thus far, guys! I've been considering purchasing a Kerambit for awhile now, as I really like the concept of a self-defense weapon that is *extremely* difficult to take away! I already have a Bear Claw, but I think the Kerambit lends itself to gross motor strikes.

If you want to learn more about the design and the right way to use it - better go to the tactical forum, moderated by Master Bram Frank - combat arnis expert and a good friend of Laci

Better yet - attend one of his seminars - and make sure Laci is also coming...

Szabo is a gr8 guy to learn from and practice with. He is also fun to hang around with.

another amazing design by Szabo is a folder made by Farid called "Rad" - this is one folder like you've never seen before...

look at it here:

Since we're both in the tactical knife business, I can say unequivocally that Laci's designs are outstanding. If I didn't respect the guy so much, I'd probably copy some of them. Laci's knives are built for the whole hand, not just the blade that sticks out the front. His blades are excellent in normal and back cuts, as well as thrusts. His handles offer security and terrific leverage in all positions. If you really study the demands placed on a knife under most tactical conditions, you realize that Laci has all the bases covered. Great guy, super knives.

I have not had any of Laci's knives but I just placed an order with him for a Keruuk. It seems to be exactly what I'm looking for and people have told me good things about his knives.
I don't think you can go wrong.

I don' think that you can beat Laci's knives. Out of my entire collection, I probably have more Szabo's than anything else. Now, for the BEST of his blades, try to get some of those made by Ernie Mayer/Black Cloud knives, those and the Wendell Fox Szabowies are great.

Laci is a great guy for sure, another former Marine, he's definitely one of the good guys.
