For those who own one or have owned one, whatcha think? Thinking of picking up the normal vg-10 blade steel version with my next paycheck.

I like it. A good cutter and very ergonomic. And don't forget, not too long ago a dad saved his little son by killing a cougar with a Caly 3.5, or so I read somewhere.

I've got the caly 3.5 in cf/ zdp 189 and it is one great feeling folder. Very ergonomic.
And the leaf shaped blade is really handy in most situations.
Its also very thin.

It's my choice for edc. I love mine, it's a great balance of everything I like in spydercos. It's a wonderful slicer with great ergos, an ambidextrous lock and a deep-ride wire clip.

Caly3.5 as well as Caly3 are great knives.IMHO they are among the best Spydercos ever made. I love ergos, edge geometry. Both of the carry very nicely in the pocket. I carried G10 Caly3 for more than four years, which was replaced with Caly3.5. Now G10 Caly3 is my travel knife.
Just wondering, don't you have a concern regarding carrying it in Brooklyn?

Well, seeing as how just about every knife is grounds for arrest here in NYC (not kidding, even my ukpk or charge tti are enough to get me arrested) I have decided to just carry what i like and hope I don't get stopped and frisked. Not the best idea, but I work in demolition and a knife is vital, along with a multi. So I assume the risk and take precautions when riding the train (which is rare) or when I'm in Manhattan (which is rarer)

That's so depressing to hear that you can't even carry a mutli-tool in NYC.
I say carry what you want.
The Caly is one of the most popular spyderco's and should be experienced everywhere.

Upsides: seems to have one of the biggest blade length to scale length ratios of any Spyderco; buries deep in the pocket; very ergonomic; nice leaf shape with fine point; and flicks open like a dream. And then, there's that mountain lion thing.

Downsides: I can't really think of any. No tip-down carry, but thats about it.

I post this pic too much, but so what.

i've found one downside to it. the grip is quite thin and narrow, it's great in the pocket, not so much in my hands, not a real problem, i can have a sure enough grip for any task, but coming from a GB or a milie for exemple it feels really tiny in the hand.

The Caly 3.5 is one of my favorite Spydies. Excellent fit & finish from Japan, smooth action, great slicer, nice ergos and one of the best values at a street price of a little over a hundred.

You know who doesn't like Caly 3.5's? People who have never used one because they have some ill-conceived notions that they don't look formidable enough and dead mountain lions that beg to differ.

I was just thinking about a caly3.5 or 3 just last night. I really want the caly 3 because it is closer to the calypso Jr, but I like the blade shape of the 3.5. Leaning more towards 3.5 as I have a lot of around 3" knives.

Coolio. Thanks for all the input fellas, looks like my para2 and ukpk will be having company ;-)

Love mine! I have the Super Blue steel sprint from a while back. Easy to pocket, yet still provides a 3.5" blade. Ergos are excellent. The Super Blue does require attention though, as it will rust/patina. It's in my pocket right now. I'm also considering others (ZDP-189?) in the Caly family too. Get yourself one.

I agree with you on this. I found that grip on my Native5 is more comfortable and feels more secure than on Calys. But this come with territory. Calys like delicas and few others have more narrow handle, so grip feels different, but absolutely sufficient. But speaking frankly I love the feel holding my Natives more. But probably Caly will beat Native in the "looks" department.

Its an amazing EDC at least for me I work in some rough areas and the wire clip makes it look like a pen or something in my pocket, pretty much completely hides the knife. Love the shape and ergos of this knife. I do have the VG-10 version with g-10 scales. I would love the ZDP-189 with G-10 scales, not a big fan of CF scale. I may have to wait for a sprint or exclusive. I have xl hands and dont find this knife to slim, but its best to handle one in person.

It sounds like you are pretty well decided. Here are some size photos vs UKPK since you mention having that one. As the last two pics show, the 3.5 keeps everything great about the 3/UKPK and just adds a little bit longer blade and a little bit longer handle. Those ergos add up to a big difference in hand.
