Hey guys. Anyone own, or ever owned the Demo knife? That all steel camp knife Camillus made for the military? Kind've like a Vic Soldier. I've been thinking about getting one. It looks pretty tough, a no nonsense hard use knife. Anyone know how well it sharpens, holds an edge, and how durable they are? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

It's been a while since I had one. I carried one a lot in the earlier days in the Army. They were good knives and sturdy. I'm planning on getting another someday for my military knives I've had and wish I still had. I have the TL-29, not to get the demo knife and a pilot's knife.

Is this what your talking about? If so I dont carry mine everyday but it sure seems like a tough little sucker to me. and the edge is great. -JoelThe middle knife obviously.

It looks pretty tough - but not as tough as a Vic Soldier. How well does it sharpen? Maybe as good as a Vic Soldier (but I doubt it). Hold an edge? Maybe as good as a Vic Soldier (but I doubt it). How durable? Maybe as durable as a Vic Soldier (but I doubt it).

I think I bought my first one in the 50's. In those days the Army-Navy stores had them in a bin for .99 cents apiece. They were okay, but just that. I recall the screw driver/bottle opener could be a nail buster, and they were heavy for thier size. If you want better for not much more money if any, get a Victorinox pioneer. The pioneer is the same thing as a soldier, but with a keyring for attachment of a lanyard. Or get a Wenger Standard Issue. Or get a Victorinox Farmer, same knife but with a wood saw that really works great.

Last I saw, Smoky Mountain Knifeworks had the Pioneer for like 16.95.

They're pretty common. IMO, they don't really compare to a Victorinox or Wenger Soldier. But they do have an American heritage, I suppose that counts for something.

Hmmm. I already have a Wenger Standard Issue. I was just wondering. The aluminum scales on the Wenger are what worried me. I was looking for something to use around salt water if I ever needed to, and I figured the stainless steel frame and blades of the demo would be better. I know salt water and aluminum don't mix too. Oh well, it the SI is the better deal, then I'll just stick to that.

I have one of the case made ones, good solid knife, but I'd take a vic over it.The blade takes a good edge though(better than any stainless case I own,not sure why)and also the blade shape works well for me.

It's well made but all of the tools are poorly designed compared to the soldiers. The can opener looks wicked, though isn't as easy to use.

I'd stick with Vic;) ...:o
