Opinions on the EZE Lap diamond rod (brass tube) field sharpener?

I'm asking this here because I'm looking at it as a wilderness survival subject.

I'm looking for a good field sharpener for my pack and I'm curious about the retractable EZE Lap diamond rod sharpener that stores in a brass tube.

I have also been researching the Fallkniven DC4. It seems to have mixed, but mostly good reviews.

Any opinions about these two systems for a hiker/backpacker/camper? Feel free to offer any other suggestions, after you give an opinion about the two I've mentioned.

It will be used on knives with 7" blades and under.

I like it. I have had one since the mid-70s. It will put a quick and serviceable edge on a blade and it's compact and easy to carry. If I remember correctly, it doesn't give you a fine edge, probably more a medium edge a bit short of shaving sharp, but definitely a good working edge. I paired one up with a Buck 110 as my working setup for several years and was quite satisfied.

They work ok but I have come to prefer a flat “stone”. Of the two you mentioned I’d go with the Fallkniven but personally I use DMT duafold with medium and fine grits on one self contained unit.

Mine is so old it has the original CA address.!! Still use it though the finish has worn to a finer one. I always take it hiking or hunting and even take it when invited to dinner [and please carve the meat ! ] A good investment .

I own the DC4 and maybe it was just me using it incorrectly (too agressively), but the diomond side is totally worn out. Seems like the diamonds got peeled off / scratched off the base plate. Ceramic side is ok, but that's just for polishing as I don't feel it removes much metal. As I say, maybe it was just me, but right now I would probably consider a two sided fold-away diamond stone instead of the DC4. A field touch up is just that, a field touch up. I don't feel the need to carry a very fine stone in the field.

Thanks for the feedback all. I ended up ordering one of each that listed so I can try them both.

DC4 = the two materials are glued together with water soluble adhesive !! I wonder if they changed that .
Diamond stones , especially coarse new diamond , pressing hard on the diamond will tend to pull out the diamonds ! But it's diamond no need to press . Let the stone doit's thing!

I've had the same EZE Lap sharpener since '78 or so. Carried it on many a scout trip, backpacking trek, and military deployment. Works great.
