Opinions on the gerber fatty

Well, Gerber quality aside I've handled this model at Wal-Mart a few times (I have a friend in Sporting goods there so I use looking at knives as an excuse to chat with him). I think it's a cool little knife. I mean, it FILLS the hand. I honestly could play with it for hours. I don't know why I like it. But it's width and size and ergos just combine to feel really good in the hand. Now, I know it's not very high quality and the blade steel is probably 440A at best but I do like the way it feels in hand. Although if you want a good knife that is a wide little beast like the Fatty then the Boker SubCom is a higher quality piece of cutlery.

The Boker SubCom doesn't have a SoftGrip handle like the Gerber Fatty,
but a textured Zytel handle on one side and a stainless steel handle on the
other side: http://www.thebladeshop.com/ProductImages/boker/B-BO589.jpg

The blade of the new Boker Plus SubCom is AUS8 whereas the Gerber blade
is made of 440A steel.

Thanks, i guess its needless to say that the subcom is better. However, has anyone used the gerber fatty? is there bladeplay? or any other problems like on the paraframe?

I bought one for my dad for fathers day and he loves it. Mind you it isn't thegreatest knife but it is worth the money. The handle is great and the blade came shaving sharp. I would check it out if you don't mind gerber knives.

Back in the dark ages they use to make some good stuff. Last time I had one it went in the trash because it would not take a good edge. I have heard that thieir Lst and Gator models are still pretty good.

I have had one for a year or so, the only problem I have had is it to grippy to slide into your pocket very easy and the pocket clip popped off, had to go to larger screws but still works. Really is not an easy knife to pocket.

my son has one and loves it. i've handled it and the overall fit and finish was pretty good. no blade play, came shaving sharp. honestly if it came in a plain edge i wouldn't mind picking one up. later, ahgar

It does come in a plain edge. you mean like a fine edge blade right? Anyway thanks for the help guys, i had a forum on gerber quality earlier and everyone told me gerber sucked, i already ordered a paraframe so its too late for that. Everyone told me the paraframe was really bad. Nice to hear good stuff on the fatty.
