My girlfriend is about to get a 2005 used jaguar x type. I know the repairs are expensive, but id like to hear any opinions on this car. Also they seem to depreaciate ( sp?) very quick. Thanks guys.

I think its a modified Ford Mondeo, a popular family and fleet car in the UK and Europe. I got a Mondeo and its a very nice car to drive.

By 2005, I have read that Ford had worked most of the bugs out of the Jaguar system. Well, at least that they hoped that they had. If it were me, I would stay away form Jags unless I could afford the repairs and then only if I intended to drive it for a VERY long time so that the depreciation wouldn't eat me alive.

They do depreciate very quicky. That's why buying used luxury vehicles can be such a bargain.

Overall, the Jaguar brand ranks very high for initial quality and long-term dependability. Don't know how their individual models rate though.

Since becoming integrated into the Ford family, does it really cost more to maintain a Jaguar than a Mercury or Lincoln? I dunno...

My wifes brother didnt have an x- type, but an s-type. thing depreciated like mad.

My girlfriends sister has an '04 x-type.

Two Words: STAY AWAY

Nothing but issues with it.. Two wiper motors, an inside door handle, power steering pump leaks (three different times) 45,000 miles and it is now starting to rattle. The fit and finish of the car is average at best.

It is impossible to work on and parts are hard to find, not to mention extreamly expensive.

Your Girlfriend can do what she wants, but I personally would stay away from it. Good Luck!

I have also heard the parts are hard to find.

My co-worker bought a '04 2.5 manual X-type in '05. He loves driving the car. Sporty, solid feel. I think it had 16k miles on it and he paid $18k. The do depreciate quickly. A number of little things (nothing big) that died during the warranty period. Nothing really drivetrain related. Stuff like door locks, headlight washer, etc.

I don't think build quality isn't that great.

It is basically a "fancy Taurus" to use his words. It is very nice for a "fancy taurus" but, fin '05, I bought my wife a '04 CR-V LE with the same mileage for the same price along with a 100k warranty. I wouldn't have considered the Ford... er... Jag. I'm sold on Toyota / Honda though.

Consumer Reports Used Car Buying Guide - for what it's worth

As my flag wagging auto mechanic says when buying used "Get a Honda or Toyota but I can pay my mortgage quicker by working on all the rest".

Good luck though!

i suppose they are "ok" but i've never been a big fan of jag and imho for that kinda dollar theres better stuff around, BMW and mercedes to name 2 right off the top of my head.

but if ya are just in love with it, they arent a bad car i suppose.

I'm in the UK.

Spoke to a guy who bought one brand new when they first came out.

In his words, and I quote "It's an under powered piece of shit!"

I tend to think that he was unimpressed.

They depreciate quickly, but thats good if you're buying used. They look like a million bucks from the front - -- and like a ford taurus from behind.

My old man has one a the thing drives great and looks good. No reliability problems, but that is just one car.

i dont know about that but they certainly arent anywhere near being "fast", imho.

Ford switch gear, a Ford key, Ford electrics but, Jaguar prices.

It what they call in the trade a Pizza Topping. You take a standard card and chuck on some extra toppings and bump up the price.

The Aston is much the same, for that much money, you still get a Ford style key to "show off" when your trying to pick up in the bar.
