Hello all- I'm wondering if anyone has been carrying/using a Mach 1 and what they think of it. I havent bought one yet, should score one before the end of the month. I'm just curious if anyone has one and has been beatin it up and how its holding up. Goodbye all, Donald.

I haven't bought one yet, but we have one at the shop I work at, so I've played with it a fair amount. It's pretty high up the list of knives that I would not mind having for my personal use. I like the addition of a second bearing on the liner opposite the lock bar. Although the knife we have doesn't seem as fast to open as a lot of others, including the Commander and CQC-7, it is very smooth and locks up nicely. Tight lockup without play in the blade. I can't quite figure out why there's two lanyard holes, but it probably saves a lot of weight

Anyway, I recommend them, and it's not just because I get coommission on the sale!

Hey Haji-Thanks for the info. As I said I'm gonna get one anyway although it's good to hear from first hand experience. Take care, Donald.

I personally handled and put a Mach-1 on hold at a Knife show saturday! This is one of the most comfortable, and smoothest Emersons I have ever used. It looks great and is really solid. IMO it is a little nicer than the Commander, but I would like a version with the "WAVE" on it.

Its pretty cool. I think that the blade profile and grind lend themselves to a broader range of utilitarian cutting tasks than Ernie's pure bred fighters. This is a good thing in my book. If I were going to take an Emerson on one of my hikes into the bush then I would pick the MACH 1.
One thing that I would LOVE to see is a MACH 1 WITHOUT serrations. These damn things ruin a clean cut every time plus they are a pain to sharpen in the field. Given the choice I'll take a cleanly honed knife any day.

Did someone say a Mach 1 without serrations?

Does anyone know if the Mach 1 will be offered with the chromium nitride finish?

Uhhh... On second thought, forget the plain edge option that I said I would LOVE to see. What I would really LOVE to see is a MACH-1 with a lower price point! No offense to the retailers out there. I know that you guys need to make your mark-up. I just think that this is an awful lot of fun tickets for the price of admission. Now if it were a waved Chro Nit Mach-1 that would be a different story!

FWIW, I was told recently (by Derek) that Emerson has switched to hard chroming for the satin finished blades...

Yeedude, did he say about how long it would take for the current stock of bead blast to be distributed, so that one would have a good chance of getting a chrome blade?

I called Emerson Knife Company today and was told there was a very limited run of chrome Mach 1's and the rest would have a black coating or the standard satin finish. Derek, can you clarify this?

Nope, he didn't say - of course, I didn't ask, either...

FWIW, I ordered a satin/plain Commander directly from Emerson a couple of weeks ago and got a semi-matte beadblasted knife. I returned it because one side's bevel area had a manufacturing booboo - a small scratch/divot. The replacement knife that I got a couple of days ago is hard chromed...

After having, carrying, and using my Mach I for a week now I have a couple of thoughts. Overall, ergonomics and materials are great. I love the BT2 coated serrated blade. The double lanyard hole is cool too. If I had my new scanner set up I would post a pic of how mine is laced. Maybe later. A few things I find a bit annoying it the single sided ground blade. I'm still not sure why this is done. Other than maybe to make for a stronger or thicker blade, I don't feel it cuts as nice as say, my sebenza. The knife seems to pull to one side when slicing slowly and opening boxes and mail. Also I wasn't too impressed with the overall sharpness of the blade. I would also like to see the pocket clip mounted higher on the handle. I don't want to get you guys upset, and don't get me wrong; I think Emerson makes a great knife! I guess I'm just pickey when it come to my carry knife. Any other comments to this welcome.

K-guy, no problem here. I agree with you on how the edge is sharpened. I am not a convert on this one. My personal opinion, with nothing to back it up, is that this is done to save a little time and money. You can get an acceptable edge while removong a step from the production process. It may very well make for a stronger edge. If that is the case, I understand, but still prefer an edge ground on both sides.

yeedude - I think i'll give Emerson a call after Independence day and order up a couple of satin finish knives. I would prefer to go through another source, but supply of certain models and options is erratic, at best

The Mach 1 is a knife that we are all particularly proud of. I like it more and more each time I play with it. Great all around design and ROCK solid.

To address some questions/thoughts;

Haji,
I never even noticed the two lanyard holes until you mentioned it:0.

ChrisJohn,
No wave in the immedeate future but it would lend itself well to it.

Ark,
We have some plain edged Black-T in stock at the shop. I was going to take that particular configuration myself but opted for the CN, 50/50, serial # 011 instead (for obvious reasons).

Dirk,
See above. We have however switched to Hard Chrome. Personally, I like the HC better. If it is going to be shiny, I want it shiny

I do not know what the current availability is on HC Mach 1's. Give Peggy a call at the shop and she will check for you. (310)-542-3050.

K-Guy & Dirk,
I am curious as to where you purchased your knife. They are all REALLY sharp when they leave the factory. At the NJ show, a guy who sold latex search gloves with "cut proof" finger tips came by. I had seen his booth and asked him about his product. He proceeded to put on a glove and ask me what knife was the sharpest. As they were all right out of the box, I told him to take his pick. He grabbed the Mach 1 and proceeded to "cut" his finger tip with it. The gloves did work but they cut through about half of the layers of the glove. His eyes widened and he said that the Mach 1 was the sharpest knife that he had ever seen and that razor blades would not cut their gloves as aggressively.

The reasons for the one sided grind are many. The inherent sharpness is one. By only sharpening one side, the included angle is much more acute allowing a sharper edge. It also leaves a bit more material and is inherently stronger as well.

Believe me that production speed and cost are NOT factors in the edge configuration. One trade off of this configuration is a tendancy to not cut in a straight line. To us, this is an acceptable trade off for it's benefits.

Hope this clears some things up.

Take care,
Derek

The #1 Hard Use Knives In The World

Hey Derek! I don't doubt the quality of production. I think Emerson makes one heck of a great knife. Maybe mine was not as sharp as others. Or possably could have been used prior to getting to me. I hope not. I just know when I try to open mail or cardboard boxes, there seems to be some drag. I don't feel the straight line thing is a factor. Being as sharp as a razor? I don't know about all that. Heck, my Sebenza is the sharpest knife I have ever owned. For as sharp as it is, it's NOT razor sharp.
I choose not to say where my Mach was purchased from to protect the dealer/s!!
