I prefer to have a spring assist mechanism in my EDC blades for ease of one hand opening and the Benchmade 580 Barrage with the new Axis-Assist system caught my eye. Anyone have any experience with this knife they can share?

Have you ever handled an Axis lock knife? For me, the autos and the assisted openers ruin the axis lock. It's much easier and quicker to open and close without the autos/AOs.

Thanks for the information and the welcome. The only axis lock I've had the opportunity to handle was A Gerber Presto and I didn't have a huge deal of trouble closing it, but the durability point is well taken. I don't like worrying if this time I open my knife is when the lock will fail.

Do you mean "the only assisted opener you handled"? Because Gerbers don't have Axis locks. Here's a video of the manual axis lock:

Gerbers in general don't have the greatest reputation for quality work. Benchmade on the other hand, generally speaking, have very good quality, reliability and durability for their price range.

Wow I made a stupid mistake there assuming the lock style was similar because of it's similar placement. Thanks for correcting me. And I have had several assisted openers, just never a Benchmade.

When I first got into quality knives, I really liked assisted openers also. That is, until I tried the Axis lock. You should give it a shot. One of the reasons for my liking the assisted openers and autos was because of how quickly they could be opened. Well, the Axis lock opens and closes quicker than most autos and all assisted openers, once you get the hang of it.

I'll give it a shot, thanks for the help. I've heard great stuff about the Griptillian family, I may look at one of those.
