Hello all! I'm new to the Gurkha forum but not to khukris. My father has a genuine khukri given to him while serving in the British military during the early 1960s. I've been looking for one of my own and I think the WWII model is the one for me. I want it for general use, light to moderate chopping, brush clearing, getting camp ready. I'd like to know if the sheath is easy or difficult to attach to your gear (belt, pack, etc.)? Does it hold an edge well? Also, in the pictures on GH the blade appears grey/black, is this the actual colour of the blade? All and any opinion/information is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I don`t have a WWII but I do have a Bhojpure which is similar. It`s just a hair shorter and a bit thicker. A WWII should be just what you`re looking for. It`s got enough weight to chop "squaw wood" (and larger if need be) ,enough thickness for splitting kindling efficiently and it`s light enough to clear brush without undue fatigue. My Bhojpure does the first 2 great but it`s just a bit heavy for machette work. The sheath shouldn`t be a problem, they have a large sturdy beltloop on the frog. Mine often rides in a deep pouch on the side of a pack anyway until it`s time to make camp. If you find you want a more versitile sheath you can always get a multi carry kydex rig from EdgeWorks. The blades are all polished except for the much anticipted WWIII which are(or will be)blued. Edge holding on my GH khukuri is quite good,in fact I`ve never had to sharpen it in the field at all. After a weekend of work a few light passes on a ceramic rod bring it right back from scraping to shaving sharp. Hope this helps. Marcus

Marcus, thanks for your reply; lots of great info. I'm glad the blade is blued, I really like the look of it. Do you have a web address for EdgeWorks?

Just to clarify,WWIII wasn`t a typo. It`s a variation of the WWII with some design changes, canvas micarta grips, hot blued blade and EdgeWorks sheath. A WWII can be blued with cold blue pretty easily though if you want. I don`t know Edge Works address but it may be in the Bladeforums links section. Marcus

Sorry about that photo! It does appear blued doesn't it? Well, he's right - the WW TWO isn't blued, but can be - my personal WW (a blem actually) is blued (I did it in my basement) and I love it that way.

There are some good threads on bluing khukuris that you might want to look for in this forum.

Okay, things are getting a little clearer...the WWII picture on GH's webpage is not blue but can be blued...WWIII wasn't a typo, but an actual model...I think I'm getting all this

Next question, is the WWIII available? I didn't see it listed on the web page. If it is available, how much? Thanks again.

Johan,

The WWIII isn't listed on Craig's web page because it's not a "standard" Khukuri (by any stretch of the imagination).

It's the result of a collaboration between a group of us here on the GH forum. Marcus originally brought the idea into the light and Tallwingedgoat gets the honor of coming up with the WWIII name.

You can get some background info on this thread. Click here to find the sign up list and there are even a few pictures of the work in progress.

Try sending Craig an e-mail about availability. There are 37 serialized WWIII's and I don't know if all are spoken for.

Blackdog, thanks for the links, I finally know what's going on. I only wish I was in time to ride the boat! I sent Craig an email, who know? I guess if I can't get a WWIII I'll go for the WWII, maybe I can get a kydex sheath?

Johan: I do have a 3 or 4 WWIIIs left in various configurations, but the price is a bit higher than the pre-registered price. I know that once the WWIII article hits the press in the fall, they'll go like hotcakes. But don't worry - if $295 is a bit more than you wanted to spend, I'll probably be doing a non-numbered, "standard issue" variant in the future (not planned at this moment, but certainly in my mind!).

I don't know about the edge retention, I don't own a GH WWII.

The WWII is probably the most balanced khukuri. It is great for moderate chopping and should handle heavy chopping. It might take a few more blows compared to an Ang Khola. It is great for bush clearing and cuts quite well.

Is your father's khukuri like the No. 1?

Wow! This thread's been going for 3 months now. Okay, let update the situation. After getting lots of info from other forum members I decided to order a WWIII (#36).

Craig-Do you have any idea how much you scarred me with that post!? I had to double check and make sure I did have one ordered.

Will-My fathers khukri is almost identical to the WWII model.

My thanks to everyone for their help, I can't wait to get my WWIII!

Neither can I! I can hardly wait. I will be taking one to Nepal with me to present to Lalit as a gift - I hope he likes our work ("our" means everybody envolved with the project - from Robert Couture to all the posters on the forum, without whom the WWIII would never have happened!).
