I have been eyeing this knife for some time now. I know very little about the steel firsthand but constantly hear about rust issues. I'm unclear on why this is because it only has .05 more carbon than 1095. Regardless, I'm just trying to hear opinions on the steel, and more importantly the knife (which was previously made in 1095?). Lastly, are there other companies that one could reccomend that use steels such as 52100 with a protective coating that don't cost as much as say a Swamp Rat, but are of the same profile/length as the bush ranger? Thanks to all and stay sharp.

bush ranger

Blade Length: 4 3/4"
O/A Length: 9 5/8"
Cutting Edge: 4 5/8"
Thickness: 3/16"
Blade Color: Black Traction Coating
Steel: 52100 RC56 Ball Bearing Steel

The two other knives I'm considering are the TOPS Nite Hunter and TOPS Dawn Warrior. Both 1095 and roughly same profile/design. Here are the links to all. Any opinions on which you all would pick out of the three for general outdoors/utility?

Lokiman,
I would get a swamprat... I know that isn't what you wanted to hear, but I think the hardness @ 56rc is a little too soft in this steel. I am not a Tops hater either, I have had a couple and currently have a Lancero in 3V, and I really like it, but if I was set on getting 52100 I would get a swamp rat. I always think the Tops knives are a little overpriced for the materials used, but if it's the design that you like, I would get the 1095 version. Regards, Steve

In general TOPS knives are very good and their 1095 is awsome. I don't know how 52100 performs at RC56 but I do know its a very good steel. Get the one you like most and use the crap out of it.

I have a Pasayten in 154cm and Mohawk hunter in 1095 and love both. A little web searching and you should at least be able to knock $30-$40 off msrp
