A friend sent me this photo. All I know is that the knife is supposed to be a 701. If it is and it's not been butchered with a bench grinder could someone give me an idea of what it might be worth? TIA

Let's see, here is a suggestion. See if your friend can find out what symbol is after the model number on the clip blade tang. If there is one, it will denote the year made. The word Buck on the tang may be in Script letters, and usually the letters on the handle shield will also be Script. Script denotes pre 1986. Value - condition of knife (New in Box down to Carried, Used, Sharpened); Age of knife; Box and paper(s). I have 13 701's and the average price I have paid - $50.43. In 1981, the 701 retailed for $28.00.

Ok. Got a chance to view and handle the knife. It's a 1990 model (X stamp) with block lettering. No rust but a little gunk here and there.

I'm not an expert, far from it in fact but I would say that only the main blade has seen any use at all and it's still semi sharp. IMO none of the blades has been sharpened since it left the factory. As the photo reflects it must have seen some pocket time based on the condition of the bolsters but nothing indicates it did much except keep the coins and lint company.

Box is end labeled as a Bronco and in excellent condition though there is no paperwork of any kind.

Any new opinions on what it might be worth?

The knife was sold at auction last night and I was lucky enough to bring her home for $40. At home, under better lighting I can tell the main blade has been sharpened, most likely on a stone as there are light scratches across the blade. Still looks like the other two blades have never been used or sharpened since the factory.

Scrubbed/wiped the interior and the pivots with 3-in-One oil, toothpicks, Q-tips, etc, and she looks great. No rust or actual damage aside from the light scratches on the clip point and on the bolsters.

The box is marked for the 301 Stockman on the bottom with a sticker beside that marking for the 701 plus the 701 end label is a stick on and you can read the imprinted 301 Stockman imprint under it. I presume the practice at Buck was to have the box made for Model A and then use labels for anything else that would fit in the same box?

Overall I'm pleased with my new addition and plan to carry it off and on. I'll get some pics later today.

I like the 425M steel. Used my Spyderco Sharpmaker on the clip point with the Medium, Fine and UF rods on the 40 degree setting. That blade is now shaving sharp. Touched up the other two as well with just the F & UF rods. I'm very pleased with how this steel takes an edge.

Found another 701 yesterday (dates to 1986) in a local pawn shop for $25. Absolutely mint without a scratch on it or any sign of use, carry or sharpening. Unfortunatley no box. Saw it and just couldn't pass it up. I think I'm hooked on the 701!

Will try and post some pics tomorrow as I loaned out my camera to my daughter.
