Opinions on what sheath to have made for Backpocket

I just picked up a Case Backpocket in CV and am having Ray make me a custom sheath. I'm sort of stuck between 2 styles. I could certainly live with both! One would require the knife to be sent for custom molding and the other would not. I want it secure yet no so tough that I couldn't pull the knife out with out holding the sheath down. What'cha think? I am using paulhilborn's pic purely for reference..

They're both really nice, but personally I prefer the look of the top one, and I guess that means you get to hang onto your knife while it's being made ;)

Nobody seems to make pocket sheaths here in the UK :(

I might have that wrong as it does seem the bottom sheath is molded more..

I like both. Maybe the top "pancake" style sheath would act like a pocket holster does? Keep the sheath in your pocket, allowing you to pull the folder free? The second one looks like a great belt sheath, but not something you'd want for easy pocket access and snug retention, at the same time. Defeat the purpose, I'd imagine. I've seen pocket sheaths for small fixed blades before, and some real nice pocket sheaths for high end folders, but haven't carried one.

Jut remembered that I got one from a member here in a trade, made for a Queen Dan Burke large barlow that I got from him.

Didn't Tony Bose put something on his site about not using these for a Bose knife :D? They were meant to be carried in a pocket? Just joanin', I was reminded by some here, and maybe Tony himself, after I asked about a pocket sheath for my Tribal Spear.

I prefer a smaller profile, so the bottom pic is my vote. I've yet to find an in-pocket sheath that I really like. I have a William Henry clip sheath that fits my smaller folders, including the 2011 forum knife (largest that will fit).

I'm looking at A. G. Russell's fancy leather belt sheaths for a couple of my knives, including the 2012 Forum knife, and a Buck 110.

I had one, but it was stolen. I like it due to the fact that it doesn't stick up above the belt line too much, like issued Buck sheaths.

I have an old Paul Chen Citizen leather belt sheath that fits many of my knives, and I love it since it is horizontal and very slim. Just can't fit my larger folders in there. I do put a 9cm Le Thiers par Chambriard stag folder in there, as it's long and slim. I believe a Back Pocket would fit in there.

I really should bring them all together for a picture.

Sorry to go off topic, but maybe others have similar ideas to share.

This is one I made for mine. It holds it snugly now but if you prefer a more snug fit then you just do another line of stitching or make it smaller like your pic above. I like to be able to lay my knife on it when it is on the table.

It is easy enough now to pull from my pocket by the lanyard , use, and drop back into the sheath while sheath is still in pocket. Its been working great and made in 20 minutes. add five minutes for more stitching:D

Jack, would British customs go nuts over a pocket sheath coming in, or would you have to pay a big duty fee? I'm guessing that shipping is a major concern :foot:. A few knifemakers over here are superb leather craftsmen, with quite a few sheath patterns that do not need your factory made knife for fitting.

I would prefer the second as it looks to fit more into the pocket.

Jack, a lot of talented sheath maker in the UK, try here http://www.britishblades.com/forums/forum.php I am sure you'll find many that can make pocket sheath to your specs..

Mike

Thanks Mike. There's a guy here in Leeds who does good-looking sheaths, but he seems to have a lengthy waiting list. Several companies do leather belt pouches, and it's easy enough to get an 'off the peg' model, but strangely no 'off the peg' pocket sheaths. In Sheffield in the past, it was really hard getting hold of a good quality sheath, even harder than getting hold of a good quality knife!

I'm sure they wouldn't. I'll have to look into it. When I started looking over here a few weeks ago, I really didn't think it'd be a problem. I might see if one of the big knife retailers here would think about getting some in as I'm sure it's just an oversight.

I like the top "pancake" type. I find that one that swallows the whole knife, protects it better, but it's a little harder to get out unless you use a lanyard.

Of the two shown; they are both nice. Go with the one that you don't have to send off your knife.
Eliminate worries. (Or am I the only one who frets while my knife is in the mail?)
