I just spotted this gorgeous knife.

Can anybody tell me a bit more about it. It's a United Cutlery Gil Hibben Sub Hilt Assault.

I'm still new to knife collecting and would appreciate some thoughts on adding this to my collection.

You think its gorgeous. Buy it.

That's all there is to it.

This. No need to make it too complicated.

It's a sub hilt fighter so it will probably be a collectable or display piece rather than something you'll put a lot of use on, unless you live a much more exciting life than most of us. ;) In that case, if you think it looks great, get it without regret.

I agree - you'll not really get much practical use out of it, so if you just want it cus it's cool (or to keep in your night stand/or by your bed) then go for it!

Also agree and appreciate the tone of the advice given so far. I still have a few knives of that style that I picked up earlier in my knife-life and they still make me happy when I see them back at my parents place.

I would think the Cold Steel OSS would be a more functional knife. Nothing United Cutlery I have handled was worth a crap. The Cold Steel has the same look but would atleast be useful if needed. Its no super steel, but it will take an edge and will resharpen easily.

As usual Marcinek, you are correct.....
The only opinion that really matters, the OP's....

Now, if this is going to be a user (not sure for what?!) and you wanted opinions on the steel or perhaps the company that makes it, we might be able to help....

Why thank you. I agree with your second point. If the OP said, "I'm want a knife for camping, what do you think of this? Should I get it?" or something like that, then one might have more to say.

But if someone says "I think this knife is gorgeous, should I get it?", then that's all she wrote. Discussion over. Even gets me to shut up!

I got one of these just for laughs and giggles:

It's much nicer than the one you're looking at and not too badly priced. It's also integral (i.e., one solid piece of 440C steel from tip to butt), so you probably won't break it if you do decide to use it.

You can find it here:

PS: If part of what impresses you about the knife you posted is the Hibben name, look up Dietmar Kressler. He designed the Boker piece. And if you really want to dig deep, look up a knife by a legendary maker named Bob Loveless called the Big Bear. ;)

PPS: Part of what I see as my responsibility around here is to try to steer newcomers in the right direction, especially if they ask for help. Thankfully, there were people willing to do that for me when I first got here. YMMV.

Well, Kylz. there you go. If you want it, get it. Not much disagreement here. As long as you are going only on looks and not function there isn't a wrong answer.

Sword guys go through this a lot. There are true functional swords and there are wallhangers. My best sword is very plain looking. Conversely, the WOW ones are cool looking but I wouldn't try to cut a fart with them.

I own a "Buckmaster" strictly for it's looks, not that I would ever use it
