A forum member contacted me asking if I'd make him a blade, based on a sketch I posted in Will Leavitt's n00b knife makers thread.
I told him I was an amateur, and didn't feel comfortable selling him a knife in my current skill level.
But, I said I'd make him one to get some feedback from him, and if he liked it he could throw a couple dollars at me, but I wouldn't expect such.
He said that was cool, and he could even trade me some leather work too, if I wanted.

This sound like a fair deal to you guys? He wants to do his own handle, so this will be just a blank with some pin holes drilled in it.

I'm a little nervous, since I haven't completed a blade yet. I have 2 WIPs and am planning on making this blade based on lessons learned on those. I'm pretty confident I can make a nice usable knife for the guy. Just wanted to hear thoughts from the pros on this.
I was surprised to be contacted to do work for somebody so soon, based on a rough sketch.

I am unqualified to venture an opinion (going to anyway), not having completed a knife yet, but if we're only talking about a raw blade blank, I don't know why that would be a problem?

If he's looking for a totally ground, heat treated and polished blade, well, that's a whole 'nother topic.

Ah, well, do you think you're skill is up to it? I suppose if you do, and it is on a "yes or no" basis, then why not? Getting a sheath or two made would be a good trade (not sure about the heat-treat cost).

If your up front with him about your concerns and not charging him anything until he gets a chance to see it what do you have to lose? I'd say go for it.

Do it , it will be good for you . You will learn how you will handle the pressures of orders even though there is no money involved because you are your worst critic .

Give it a try Wade!
Just don't promise something you're not sure you can deliver and don't get too caught up in having to make a perfect blade!
Give yourself plenty of time to get the job done too!

Thanks guys.
He said he was in no hurry, so I plan to use what I learn from the knife I'm doing with Will, to make this other one that much better.
