I loaned out my BWM to a buddy who went out to a training exercise designed to teach some UW stuff. You basically get to run around in whatever cammies you want and be a rascal. Lots of opportunities for knife use and abuse. Since my buddy is a 6'3" 230lb man with a childs brain, I figured he would do more to it than I have up to this point. He put it throughout the ringer for two weeks of daily abuse. It gave him three stitches in the hand and as he was getting fixed up a MSG who knew of busse knives told him that I was an idiot to lend it to him and he was an A--hole for doing the things he had done. According to my buddy, a Maj then came in and borrowed it to be thrown against some trees. His end of the bargain was upheld.:D

Now that i have it back, I am even further impressed. the edge is dulled just past easy paper cutting along the entire length up to about two inches from the edge. It left almost hair splitting (finished with 1 micron strop). The edge that starts at the belly all the way to the tip is severely impacted. almost 1/2 to 1mm wide in some points.

How would y'all sharpen this since the rest of the edge is is such good shape. I have DMT plates XC to XF and strops at 6, 3, and 1 mic. Since this is the least used are of the edge should i just get it close and call it good? Will taking the XC to only the impacted area affect future sharpening or mess the bevel up? the contrast between the two sections of blade is whats giving me pause.

Thanks for advice Hogs,

Wyatt

Maybe use a 1" belt sander to repair and blend it to the existing edge.

If the edge is mis-aligned take a smooth screw driver and use it like a steel to re-align the edge. This will not remove much if any steel, and will then allow you to use a real steel or ceramic to return it to a working edge. You can then strop away to your level of satisfaction.

THe top edge of a window in your vehicle can do the same if your out, and the blade isnt too severe.

found a steel and did some work realigning the edge. It made some effect, not much since the edge was pretty much flattened near the tip. I decided to sack up and give it ago. after about 3.5 hours on xc i raised a burr on the affected area and then brought that bur towards the choil. I was using 30 strokes per side to keep the alignment until the bur was formed. Worked pretty good, skin is grey and smells of info dust. Ill finish tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestions.

I like ceramic bench stones and loaded strops...but it takes sooooo long. I've started using a 1x30 belt sander...which saves a lot of time. You can get fine grit belts that wont remove very much metal...and finish with a leather belt to strop. It is THE way to go IMO.
