I'm looking at getting Shapton Pro Stones for my KME as they do not make the Shapton Glass for the KME as they are Glued to Tempered Glass and it will shatter if you try cut it.

I was wondering are the Pro Stones more like the Chosera's that tend to be more on the soft side and wear faster,I'm always looking to try different Stones for my KME and really want to try the Shaptons.

I don't think the Chosera stones could be considered soft or fast wearing. I have a Shapton pro 1k and it is a very hard stone, has a more ceramic sound and feel but I don't think it's any slower wearing than a Chosera. The Chosera stones just have a much smoother feel. If you have some wear resistant steels the Shapton would be a better choice.

Thanks for the advice,do you think the 16K shapton will do as fine of an edge as the Chosera 10K or will it be a bit rougher edge and more toothy,I know the Chosera does an amazing job of really deburing the edge and I don't see any result's from stropping using DMT Diamond paste or the CBN,I have all the CBN but the .01 and have tried stropping for 2 hour's with me and a friend just to see if we could improve sharpness and could not get it to cut any better at all.

I'm planning on getting a Japanese Chef Knife made from ZDP-189 and I have ZT's with ELMAX steel and the ELMAX is pretty good and goes very fast with the Chosera's.The only thing I realy have against the Chosera's is that they are fairly thin and won't take long to wear level with the stone holder on my KME,where as Ken Schwartz was telling me the Shapton's are 5 to 6mm thick.

I have only used the 1k pro so I can't say what the 15k is like. I have used the whole Chosera line and the 10k polishes very well but I can't say it's the best polishing stone I have used in that range.

The shaptons are faster stones so it's probably a solid choice. I wasn't factoring the stone thickness and width and with that I understand how the shaptons would be a better fit. Maybe just fill in the lower end with shaptons and keep the 10k Chosera for finishing?

I have always been a sucker to spend money and I just know it will drive me crazy if I get 1500 5000 8000 and not a 15K I'll go nut's wondering if I could have gotten just a tiny bit more sharpness out of my Edge, isn't that what we all seek to have the sharpest edge of all time.

I know with my Japanese Chef Knvies right out of the box they are super sharp and even the 119.00 one cut's like a Lazer never mind my 215.00 one witch really cut's threw anything and is scary sharp as well and of course you know how it goes when your knife get's dull you sharpen it and wonder if I only this stone it's because it's just a bit finer grit then my finest stone what an edge I could put on this baby then.

Honestly I'm not kidding I really think I'm sick and really fine grit stones are my Meds because they still haven't found a cure,I just hope the Mr's doesn't go to the bank I don't really want to explain where the Nest egg went LOL.

The pros are quite hard once you get past the 1500 , almost like granite. Im sure if that's what you are looking for you will be happy.

With that being said they are unforgiving , they have no give and you have to be bang on the edge of the edge as they don't release any abrasive and have no mud to fill in the gap as it were.

When you say they are not very forgiving I assume that you mean when you go to sharpen a knife again or just to touch it up because they have lost their edge a bit and it's just a touch up that you want to be bang on the same angle you sharpened at last time.

I'll be using them with my KME and I have a Digital Angle finder so I can always get to the exact angle I used before.

Precisely , they don't have any give or any mud once you get past the 1k , more like sharpening on glass or granite , you either love the feedback or hate it , but you have to learn to respect them and their idiosyncrasies. for example

your doing a knife and want to go from your 1k pro to the 2k pro , no problems , but before you make that jump I would lap the 1k and make a few quick passes just to get the bevel true. The 1k will dish a bit and that concavity can change the shape of the bevel slightly , when you hop up to the granitelike 2k stone it has no give and no mud , so it might not reach the edge of the edge or just leave an uneven ugly looking finish.

The 1500 pro is an underrated stone that really helps correct the issue , I would still flatten the 1k before moving on , as the 1500 is still quite hard.

Just small things like that make them less forgiving on a guided system.

If I go up to a 15000 Pro or 16000 Glass stones is the edge going to get reached like you thought it may not with a 2000,

I'm planning on getting either 1500,5000,8000,15000, in the Pro's

or

2000,4000,8000,16000,in the glass.

Do both the Pro's and the Glass both wear really well or is it just the Pro's.

They both wear well.

Yes you will reach the edge of the edge , you just have to be doing your part is all.

By doing my part is all you mean what? do you mean make sure the stone is flat or make sure to really give the blade a good going over.

Do your part sharpening, the tools are useless without your guidance.
