I am thinking of getting a whittler for regular carry.Who do you think makes the best quality whittlers currently available. I welcome opinions on regular production knives and customs too, even though I can't afford a custom yet.
TIA,
Jack

Ive heard good things about the GEC Whittlers. It you are pattern specific, they would be a great way to go. If you are simply looking for a whittling knife, try Case, Boker, or maybe Queen.

I find the Böker Germany carbon models to be excellent quality. Tapered backspring, 3.5"

Queen Cutlery D2 blades in bone or woods with divided backspring is a desirable knife

Don't rule out the RR Old Yellow model either, Whittler on the bottom with divided backspring. Remarkably good for very little money.

What Will says - the Bökers are outstanding, as are the Queens. I have of this knives and I really appreciate 'em as great users and great pocket carry knives. You regret one or the other (or preferably both) :D

These Case/Bose Collaboration Lock Back Whittlers are a little pricey but probably less then a custom would be. I prefer the Ebony with the Wharncliffe main but the Stag with the clip main is no slouch.
The primary blades are pretty stout. The ebony secondary's are a curved pen and a small clip. The stag secondary's a coping and a pen. All the secondary blades are ground very thin. All blades are flat ground stainless. ATS-34 on the stag, 154CM on the ebony, pretty much the same steel.
Whatever you decide I'd recommend at least 3 1/2" closed, preferably 3 7/8" to 4". Control is much better with the longer frame.
Happy hunting!

Check out the GEC website. They have a new whittler in the works that looks pretty sweet. Seems like it'll be a little bit before it's released, but GEC never fails to impress. It'll probably be a step down in price and quality from the Case/Bose or a custom, but a step above most other production knives.

If you like smaller knives, here is a winner:

If you can swing it though, Peregrin's suggestion is the best out there IMO.

The Seahorse Whittler should not be dismissed:

Over sized Wharncliffe main, coping, and pen blades. :)

I appreciate all the suggestions. Now I have to decide exactly how much I can afford to spend. Certainly can't swing the abalone version of this knife, though it is pretty, too pretty for a carry knife.

Primble, that's a very pretty Seahorse, but how are those blade for slicing? I always figured they were a bit on the thick spine side of things? the main blade that is.
