Hello,
Just looking for quick opinions and input please.
I will be getting a knife for my bestman as his wedding gift. He collects and loves knives so I am looking for something he can really appreciate by quality and very aesthetically pleasing. He does not have many higher end knives so this will be a great opportunity. Looking to spend about $100-150 on a folder, will extend budget if the knife is worth it, but saving money is nice as groomsmen will be getting knives as well; but that's for another day haha. Will be name engraved just an fyi.

Some I have circled so far and my thoughts:

Proelia TX010 - Love the look, lower cost, tremendous packaging that would be a great gift box

Viper Knives Ten - Love the overall look

Mcusta Katana - Unique (sorry for the rough image)

Hogue EX04 - Great design, I've heard good things

Benchmaid 300-1 AXIS FLIPPER - Benchmaids are iconic

These are some I have really been drawn to on behalf of my bestman (Twin bro), any input would be highly appreciated on these and also other recommendations for me to further research as well.
Thank you for your time and input,
MRuss

Spydercos and ZTs are not an option, I left that out earlier.

Out of those I like the viper the best. Also check out the zt 0566 flipper I think they can be found for around 144.

+1 for ZT given the other examples you've shown. The 0566 or 0350 could be excellent options and come in a variety of finishes.

If you check out Lionsteel I believe you will find several options in your price range. Be careful, however, there are some rather expensive holes you can fall into there ;).

Out of those listed, I like the Hogue best. The red lava g10, unique wharncliffe blade, and button lock are really cool.

Go with ZT or Benchmade. Can't go wrong with either one and if he's a "knife guy" he'll know (or will find out) the value and popularity of the given knife. Some of the foreign made brands are hit and miss on quality. Sometimes.

I also noticed you didn't mention or show any Spyderco or Emerson knives. Spyderco has some nice offerings in that range and an Emerson can be found in the top of that range here on the forum.

You might want to check out the Benchmade North Fork, from their Hunt series. My wife gave me one for my first Father's Day, and it's a great combination of classy, somewhat traditional appearance with a very functional, pocket-friendly design. S30V steel, so it's not just eye candy.

I doubt you'll be able to find an Mcusta in time!!
I have the Hogue in 4" and I can tell you the knife is absolutely awesome! Super smooth, great great blade, button lock is sick and it's wonderful in hand!
I love it and I'm sure your bro would also!
Good luck!
Joe

I would go with the Hogue or the Viper. Both companies have very, very good fit and finish and a very unique aesthetic. The Hogue will be more of a tough, work knife where the Viper will be very capable, but probably more of a gentleman's knife.

The Benchmade 300-1 is a good knife. I really liked mine when I owned it. Flipping action takes some practice, but I got the hang of it. The handles are nice and contoured, so provide a good grip. That would be my choice out of those. The first knife looks pretty cool and would probably be my second choice, but I know nothing about it, the 4" blade would be a little large for me though.

Out of the blades listed I like the Benchmade. If he likes knives but doesn't have a knife like this, I think he will appreciate a brand that he is probably more aware of. The perceived value when he opens it will most likely be higher than some of the others.

While I am sure he'd appreciate any of them, I might consider his use for the knife as well. When I picked groomsman gifts for my wedding I had EDC in mind so I went with a thin, light weight folder. If you think you'd want to get him a knife that he can use and carry every day I might go with a Benchmade 531 instead. It's not as BA looking and heavy duty but I bet he might get more use from it.

Taste in knives is by no means universal. You are obviously close, but that doesn't necessarily mean you have similar tastes. Basically, what I'm suggesting is that you focus less on what you think looks cool, and try to gear your choice to what you think your brother may like. You mention that he doesn't have many higher end knives, that could make it easy (in that he'll get excited over whatever you give him), or difficult (if he's got specific likes/dislikes). Is there a brand that he seems to like? Or something you've heard him mention that he wants to try? I'm inclined to agree with Hale Storm and Eric@DLT - go with a recognized brand.
I understand the gesture of engraving the knife, given the occasion; but it could relegate the knife to a dresser drawer "to keep it nice".

The benchmade 300-1 is a great knife. Probably one of my favorite folders by benchmade. The hogue is also a good choice, but he will probably recognize Benchmade more readily.

Of the blades you listed I would suggest the BM300.

I also suggest you check out a Spyderco PM2 (about $120)

If you can't figure a way to sneak out of him what knife he really likes but doesn't own...

...I'd go with the Mcusta. I think any knife lover would like it, probably doesn't own one already, and would see that you took that extra step to really pick something more out of the 'ordinary' for him. They are very fine knives.

What kind of knives does he already own? That could give us a better idea what his preferences are.

Maybe ask to see his collection and then snap a photo?
