optical flaw or fatal crack?

Hi.

I recently acuired my first blade with more traditional materials. Now I've discovered a small inconsistency in the wood of the handle and I'm unsure wether its just an optical flaw or a possible and dangerous breaking point. Could someone here help me analysing it?

Thanks!

That kind of grain is often found with defects like holes, cracks etc .What you have doesn't look like a problem.
BTW grain like that isn't normally used in a Heavy recoiling rifle stock As even small hidden cracks may not hold up to recoil and fail !

I would say an optical flaw by looking at it (assuming you mean the line below the divot). Of course if you feel for the price you paid that there shouldn't be a flaw like this, return or exchange it.

Wood like that is often found with dimples and waves like that in it, that's the compromise you make to get gorgeous grain. I would say you have nothing to worry about. Now, I want to see the whole knife!

Looks like the natural "imperfection" of the material. Many would consider it a beauty mark. No cause for alarm.

I desire more pictures! That is a neat looking handle, and that mark really does just add a bit of character to it.
