Does anyone know what optics have range finding bars (like Steiners) that do not cost a lot of money? By optics I mean binos and spotting scopes. I am not looking for some low quality garbage, but I don't need Steiner quality just yet, but I want the range finding bars.

Thanks. :D

Interesting question. I'd look for military surplus. I was given optics at a range and they weren't steiner, but built to steiner specs. You couldn't tell the difference till you held them, or looked through them. I think they were fujinon maybe? I'd bet military surplus is your best bet.

Hey Peter...

What are you doing with it ??

If it's just a range finder you want,,for something like hunting,, why not just go with a handheld laser range finder ??

They aren't that much money,,and are pretty frigging accurate..
We use one all the time when hunting at even closer ranges..

Thanks for the replys.

I am going to look into both the lasers and mil surplus.

I sort of want the range finding built into the optics to cut down on the amount of stuff I have to carry, plus the cool factor. I guess the lasers would be better for the landscaping work I may be helping out with. They also might be better for shorter ranges.

The optical range finders work off the principle of knowing how big your target is before hand and are somewhat approximate. An average deer chest is 15" across for exampe, so the rings/checks on a range finding scope are sized to cover 15" at the given range. Seems to work OK for target practice or hunting type purposes, but if I was wanting to do any measuring for landscape I would think the laser type would work better. They use a beam to take an actual measurement off of the point you're interested in.

Tasco Offshore series as well as ATN has those reticles. Included are instructions as to how to calculate distance. The cooler versions have a compass built in as well.

I will second that I have a nikon 6x that I usually carry instead of binos when deer hutning. It's a great tool to have around!

My choice for price, the Tasco OS-36 and OS-54 (I beleive those are the models) are the same save for the ruby coating on the leses of the 54.

They can be had fairly inexpensively on EPrey.

They are pretty heavy though...
