Okay, traded in an Oly Arms Car-15 for a SIG 556... It's got no sights... I'm wondering - I want something that can work up close for rapid target aquisition AND for stuff out to say 500 yards...

I have to admit the only sights I've ever used are iron sights on target guns.

So, I've read a little about ACOG's, Eotech holosights, Elcan's, Aimpoints, etc, but I've no realworld experience with them.

I have read that the Eotech is pretty durable and can be had at a decent price, but it's really only good for close up stuff; for distance you need to add a magnification piece, which apparently can be flipped to the side for an easy transition between close up and distance needs...

Kinda leaning towards that as a solution, but I thought I'd ask here for any assistance in narrowing my choices down to...

What's y'all's opinions???

And thanks in advance!!!

I have used an Eotech with the 65 MOA circle and 1 MOA dot reticle. The 1 MOA dot is easily good for 200 yard shots without a magnifier. At shorter distances, target aquisition is about as fast as you could want. My only gripes about the Eotech are battery life and the auto shut off feature. It won't stay on for a whole shift without being reset. Always have a couple spare batteries. If the reticle blinks when you turn it on, get new batteries in there ASAP. You should also consider a quality set of back up iron sights. I haven't had any experience with the magnifier. Hope this helps.

imho the ACOG is best but its also pretty pricey.

eotech works pretty good, i dont think they need any mag, not any more than any of the red dot style 1X optics would anyway.

of the 3 i would probably go with the aimpoint due to battt life and i just like them.

trijicon ACOG is indeed, best. we have them on our m-4's in iraq. we use the 4x32 models, and that would seem to fit the bill for you-- fast acquisition and good enough to 500m.

they are tough. very, very tough. the soldiers bang up their rifles a lot and we've had no issues with broken ACOGs. the fiber optic bar is pretty nifty and very adaptable in any lighting condition.

they are pricey, but if you're serious about a serious sight, ACOG is the way to go. when i get back i will be buying one for my personal weapon.

we also have aimpoint compM2s. they are alright. battery powered, very tough. i don't like them because they are battery powered and offer no magnification. but they would work great for fast acquisition and you can use them with both eyes opened if you are used to it. i read somewhere the battery thing is a non-issue because some of the new aimpoints offer like up to 80,000 hours life on one battery? so.. that's 9.25 years of continuous use? not bad.

tell us about your SIG 556 and your olympic arms car! i'm on the market for a new assault rifle. i figured i'd just jump on the ar-15 bandwagon but i'm open to new options and the sig 556 looks nice.

Midget - Since you are a returning soldier, I would recommend a Colt 6921 SBR. The SIG-556 is a nice rifle once you get rid of the plastic stuff and bring it up to "mil-std". The Colt SBR will cost you $1200 plus $200 for the NFA paperwork and will match your fightin' rifle you know so well.

Joeshredd - For sights, a lot of people break the EO-Tech's. An Aimpoint M3 can be left on at a lower power setting for a years. If a few hundred extra dollars isn't a deal breaker get an ACOG. For CQB, I'll take an Aimpoint with a 4MOA or larger dot (2MOA is too small IMHO).

What's he going to do with a 4 MOA dot at 500 yds?

I much prefer my EOTech to any red dot I have seen. Sid is right that the smaller dots are too hard to acquire in a hurry. The 65 MOA circle takes care of speed on target and the 1 MOA dot gives you decent precision. I would love to really try an ACOG- they sure look great in the store. I will be getting the magnifier for my EOTech soon, but unfortunately, not soon enough to help you!

i have shot my eotech and aimpoint at 300 yards (on colt M4's) with nary a problem they both work fine, you get used to the dot size on the aimpoint FWIW, and ya compensate for it, does make things a little harder though.

i dont have a 500 yard range in my neck of the woods lol, i do shoot both of them at my place in the country, and its farther than 300 yards (or can be) but am not sure how far it is exactly, possibly 500, maybe, never have shot an M4 at that range though, would be fun to try though..........

but do agree the eotechs are good too, no complaints with mine at all.

for 500 yards the ACOG would be the best bet, like i say though i never shoot my 5.56's at that range, when its that far i want my 7 rem mag w/a 6-18X scope lol.

I'm running a Leupold 1.5-5 on my Sig556 with a doctor optic back up on a LaRue mount. Works really well.
