Optimum angle for a hunting knife?

What do you guys feel is the optimum angle of sharpness for a hunting knife? I have heard as low as 20 and as high 30. I am looking to put the optimum angle on a couple of my deer hunting knives.

I have a Sharpmaker and an Edgepro Apex as tools to sharpen the knives. The Sharpmaker has a 15 and 20 degree edge(one side) ability and the Edgepro goes from 15 to 24(I think). I want to set the profile with my Edgepro and touch-up with the Sharpmaker. What would be the optimum angles to use?

The best angles are determined by the grind and the steel. Better (harder and tougher) steels can take more acute angles without chipping or rolling. Blade thickness (grind) also matters. If you post the model of knives and the steels used you will get a more accurate and helpful answer.

Without the above info, I'd use a setting of 17.5-20 degrees per side, for a total angle of 35-40 degrees inclusive.

I dont go over 30 degrees. I hunt moose and birds and work a lot of fish. I also camp and work construktion. I never ever go beyond 30 degrees. I very seldom go under 20 degrees (for a carbon small EDC folder)
