Options to repair discontinued model?

I have a Buck Colt 703 with script lettering and 2 back springs. One of the springs broke. From what I've read Buck doesn't have parts to fix this and they would just offer me a 303 as replacement. The knife has sentimental value so I would like it repaired instead of replaced. So what are my options?

I'm pretty handy, is this something I could possibly repair myself if I buy another for parts?
If it is not something I should try myself is there a company out there that would be able to do this for me?

Thanks for your help. I've already learned a ton about the knife from the forums.

Welcome to the forum Oats. I think your best bet might be to contact Leroy Remer in CA. LeRoy worked at Buck for years and I believe started their Custom Shop. If anyone can put your Colt back in order I'd bet he can. I believe his contact info was posted recently in a thread I started about these knives. I'll see if I can locate it.

Fount it, post #11 in the thread below.

It occurs to me.........(I may be out of line here) that Leroy does some great knife art and is pretty expensive and a simple repair job might be better done by someone else......or even yourself.

You can likely get advice on how to do it from our local pro and semi-pro knife manglers (who are some extremely talented guys) and if they can't tell you how to do it, one of them could probably do it a lot cheaper than Leroy.

another option is to put that one up...retired...and shop for another script tang 703 on the auction sites, if you are looking to use that particular model....even if you buy a two spring 703 there will be no way to tell if it has one the mis tempered springs...so a rebuild may yield the same end result...it was an issue on the very early production models and was rectified but there are no distinguishing markings to differentiate...
hope this helps ...

It will be put up and not used, but I'd prefer to put it up repaired if it isn't too hard to do myself or too expensive.

I've been doing some searching but not finding much on self repair. I image there is a pin holding the springs in place, and it is behind the scales. I've been trying to find out about re-attaching scales. Are they held on by tiny rivets or pins? All the guides or pictures I've found about scales use epoxy after drilling out the original rivets/pins.

I would post this on the traditional forum as I believe there are guys who either repair or know people to repair slip joints. I had an offer to fix a Case Barlow a couple years ago-dont have that info available anymore.

You might consider buying a beater 703 from an online auction to get the replacement spring. In terms of having the repair done, if you don't want to send it to Mr Remer or do it yourself, I know that Orvet and Muskrat Man (trad forum, also AAPK) do this kind of work. Good luck!
