Looking to send something "unique" to my recently deployed nephew...
Just how useful are tactical pens, and which has an advantage over the other?
Looking at Mil-Tac and Benchmade.... any other types I'm missing?
Anything "custom" out there?

How useful are they? Most of them write well. I've got the Lightfoot, Mil-Tac, Surefire, and Perrin. The Surefire is the most elegant, the Perrin's the best buy. I really like the Mil-Tac, comfortable writer and the cap holds pretty well on the back when you're witing. As far as tactical ... I would not want to have to rely on one for self-defense. :p

For me a tactical pen wouldn't be a weapon, it would be a defensive tool, defend the ink cartridge from my abusive ways.

Yeah, go with the BM. I've heard they write really smooth, and should for $95-$130...EDIT, they all write smooth, it's the refill. Thanks Esav!

Get that red and blue one too, that one niiiiiice..

They all write smooth. It's the refill, not the pen that writes, anyway. Find one that takes a common refill so replacements aren't a problem. See if they take a Parker Jotter refill (they'll take a Fisher, too).

great point... that Fisher refill will write "damp" also, won't it? ...or is that one differant than the "space pens" that are good in cold conditions?
Thanks for the posts fellas - keep'em coming....

I have the Hinderer Ti and the Hinderer Alum. and the Surefire goes with me every time, this is due to not having to worry about the cap. The Surefire only requires a twist, and in the non- office settings, you don't want to lose the cap of your pen. Plus it's easier to use and requires one hand, not the two for unscrewing and cap replacement. Plus the Surefire looks like a normal pen, and my Hinderers look like they could be something more. Think LEO/Airport security. My 2 cents.

If you're over-extended on your toy budget like me, take a look at the SS Zebra F-701 pen. I read about them on EDCforums, and picked a couple up for air travel last summer. For under 7 bucks, you can't beat it! It's not quite as solid as the real tactical pens, but still pretty impressive. For an added bonus, it takes a standard Fisher refill.

+1! I'd like to have a Surefire, but for those on a budget (me) the Zebra is pretty nice, and I won't cry if I drop it in the lake.

Clead, has given the best advice so far IMO, for being deployed I can't really see using any of the other tac pens, maybe the SF, the thing is, the caps. They make them somewhat awkward to write with , esp. with a billion lbs. of gear on. If you are just trying to get hime a cool a$$ pen, you can't beat the Hinderer. For actual use I like the Mil-Tac better. However I use the Zebra f-701 more than both combined.

I like the fact that if some overzealous security clown :jerkit: wants it, he can have it. Walmart and Staples both carry it so it's dead-easy to replace.:D Plus, even with a Fisher refill, they're around $12 each, so I can afford to have one in the truck, one in my pocket, one in my get-home bag etc.

I can see your point about the caps being very valid... no cap is better!
the SureFire's glass breaker may come in handy - but as a "tactical" item of gear, he would be served just as well with a stout metal pen body like the Zebra 701.
However, I see the Zebras' shiney finish as a problem - kinda leaning towards the Surefire in olive drab right now...
Thanks folks, you all have me thinking along the right lines now I suppose.
Whether it's a relevant piece of gear - or not.... I just don't wanna send him the standard wet wipes and toothpaste kinda things.....
