Looks like I have two teeth in my lower jaw to get pulled next Friday. Apparently, my wisdom tooth is putting a lot of pressure on my next tooth, thus causing the pain and bulging I've been in.

The nurse tells me they literally flap my gum back to remove them. Its being done Friday and she claims I should be in shape to go back to work on Monday. My co-workers say that complete and total BS... I'll be down for a week.

Honestly, folks... how long will I be down?

It's going to depend on how difficult the extractions are.

Personally, I had all 4 of my wisdoms out at the same time. Extractions went textbook, the surgeon was able to get them out without using the chisel.

Percocet kept the pain down, and icepacks (15 minutes on, 15 minutes off) kept the swelling down to a bare minumum. I didn't need the pain meds after the second day.

You'll probably be eating broth, mashed potatoes, yogurt, etc for the first few days.

Be sure to ask a whole lot of questions about the after care.

Hope this helps.

I was back the next day IIRC[been many years]. You would too if you're not a wimp !! Do NOT take a general anesthetic !! Use only a local .General is very different and can be very dangerous... Btw way my father had impacted wisdom tooth removed without anesthetic because it made him so sick !!! The dentist was a nervous wreck after that !!..The procedure can be very simple or complex depending on what's there .Yank a tooth , split and yank ,cut gum etc whatever.

I had 3 wisdom teeth removed on one day, they did general anesthesia because they needed to block my throat. You COULD go back to work 2 days later but if you got local anesthesia you could totally go back the next day. Mine were still in the gum so they cut the gum and cut the teeth in pieces and removed.

I had novocaine for all my dental surgery and tylenol with hydrocodone for the soreness the next day and it wasn't a big deal except the one time only half the tooth came out and they had to go in after the roots and file and rasp my jawbone and all that -- other than that one time it was not a big deal at all; I certainly wouldn't have had any problem going to work Monday after an extraction Friday.

If the surgeon pulls out half a tooth and shows it to his assistant and his assistant goes, "Uh oh," then you can think about maybe missing work Monday. :D I don't think that happens very often.

I'm being told that I'll be under a local...

It's funny, some people tell me they went to work two days later and the next makes it sound like organ transplant surgery. Guess we'll see...

I just had 2 wisdom teeth removed 3 weeks ago - upper & lower on the same side. I was eating regular food the same night. Only pain med I took was regular Advil. The most pain I had was from the pulling of the stitches. He took them out a week later & all has been well so far. Good luck!

My good friend had 2 of his remove and I saw him 5 days later and he was still really puffy and in a lot of pain........

Basically, you'll be down for 4 days at least. some people's wisdom teeth problems are different than others.
Your case, sadly, is the one where they have to do some extensive mouth work.
But in some peoples case, they've already pushed up through the gums like normal teeth where you just have cut the gum to get them pulled. just like baby teeth, basically.
But mine were pushing my back molars up, and were literally under the rest of my teeth about an inch below where they were supposed to be.
And my top ones were high around my lower cheek region.
So, they had to cut out a bunch of gum pulp, so they could lift it up to even get to my wisdom teeth. then they had to remove the wisdom teeth, I don't know in peices or what, but I think so.
I was down for about... 7 days. The pain is bearable, but I would ask for neoproxin(?). with out it I would've died from pain.
The bottom row was particularly worse than the top, because of the empty pits where the wisdom teeth were got infected.
But hey, laying around drinking milkshakes all day isn't that bad. I am telling you though, take the neoproxin. Request it.

and wth are you guys talking about? He obviously has impacted wisdom teeth, which is very dangerous. It is a serious surgery, just like getting surgery on your eyes or something. you wouldn't go back to work in 3 days after that would you.

I had all the wisdom teeth taken out when I was about 22. All four were impacted, and thank god they put me under! I couldn't eat for several days, they bled for a couple of days then a couple days more after having the sockets cleaned, and the pain lasted for months.

The major immediate pain was from the extraction itself. I think the lingering pain was from having my jaw stretched open so far and the muscles pulled. Tylonol w/ codeine, didn't do squat.

Yep, like crap. But it's not predictable. I remember when my college roommate has his taken out. He looked like a chipmunk for a few days, without any serious pain, then was fine.

It just depends...

Reading this thread makes me very happy that I'm one of the few people who actually gets to keep theirs...
How does that happen?

I waited as long as I could. But they were impacted and food had gotten stuck down in there and started to rot the teeth, even though they weren't exposed. Plus, I had to get it done while I was still on parents' insurance.

I had all 4 wisdom teeth out around 1980, in hospital under general anethetic. Felt very sick afterwards due to the anesthetic drugs. Looked like a hampster for 2 days, and was back at work in 4. Jaw was aching a bit for a week as they use some sort of gadget to wrench your mouth open.

Two of the lower wisdom teeth used to make the gum swell up and sore. Glad to be rid of them.

Guess it depends on who takes them out and how good they are. Ask for oxycodone HCI 5 MG believe me it is better to have them than try to get to the emergency room at 3 am. Ice 30 min on /1 hour off first 24 to 72 hour's & if the meds aren't needed you can put them in your Y2 Bag

If at the beginning of the procedure the doc asks you "Is it safe?", you might want to postpone the whole ordeal.

I had all four wisdom teeth removed and was out for a good week. Thank god I opted to be knocked out as the doctor said it was more complicated than he expected.

Man, You guys have me counting my blessing big time!!!

All 4 came in fine.

I'd have to be in A LOT OF PAIN before I'd trust a dentist with a chisel!!!:eek::eek:

I just have plenty of room in my mouth, dentist actually said I probably had room for another set. My dad and both my grandparents on his side still have all their wisdom teeth, we have big mouths :D
