orange 550 cord ?

OK, OK, I know when I'm beaten, lol. Lots of votes for Countycomm, they are obviously great. It's a shame that they don't ship to the UK. Supply Captain does, and lightning quick too!

I bought mine from County Comm and from TADgear. The TAD stuff is kind of a burnt orange color and has 4 inner strands. Junk.

Any mountaineering store should have a selection of various cords.

One thing to keep in mind, the cord they sell at any climbing/mountain sports store (accessory/prusik cord) will be much more durable than 550 paracord. It will be less prone to picking and more abrasion resistant. It'll also cost at least double the price. 3-4mm would be a good size. 2mm is very strong but quick stiff usually.

Just my 2cents worth. I used to sell climibing gear, climb quite a bit, and even toured PMI's rope plant in North Georgia. If you can afford it, I would definetely recommend actually climbing accessory cord over 550 anyday.

I seem to remember that the 3mm cord I carry has more strength than 550 cord. And it is noticeably smaller in diameter. No inner strands though.

I never even thought of that, honestly, but it's good to know.

I dare say though, most of the time I don't need much more strength than the mil-spec stuff and I seem to go through a lot of it, so it would take more convincing to get me pay double.

How much tensile strength does the climbing chord have?

I believe even the 2mm is stronger than 550. People have to remember that paracord was designed for parachutes, i.e. to be strong enough but mainly lightweight and very flexible. It does work well but I don't like how easily it picks. True climbing accessory/prusik cord is designed to be strong and abrasion resistant first and foremost and definetely does that.

Some 3mm will have no innerstrands, no room, while I do believe that some of them do. Doesn't matter as the strength is there no matter what. I like the tying/untying characteristics of accessory cord better too. If one had the room the 5mm is awesome stuff, easily capable of holding body weight and then some, just a bit bulky.

I got a chance too PMI's rope plant in north Georgia one time. It was awesome to watch the rope spinners in action. They can actually make a rope over a mile long without a single splice if so ordered. The other thing is that they have a bunch of ladies that literally hand inspect through sight and touch every single inch of climbing/rapelling rope that comes off the spinners. Every so often they take these ladies and make them hang in harness from a section of rope they inspected to remind them of the importance of doing a good job. They have a pic of this gray haired lady hanging on a rope with a hat and all.
