This was my first time working with RIT. I might give it another go for something a little brighter. Mirror edge is next. Some leather would really be nice.

I should probably stop spending so much on knives and invest in a better camera.

Super Sqirrel, that looks freakin' awesome!!!!

I love that look on the SM BK11.

Great job, brother.

cool stuff man. do the pics do it justice or is it a different shade in person. I like it alot

Sometimes I see the CSM Necker and think "eh", and other times I see one and I think "wow"

This is a "wow" time for me.

I'll be interested to hear about the process that got you this color.

Also, for those of you that were trying to remember exactly what shade the stock micarta has, here you go.

That looks pretty darn cool. Definitely post up how you did it. I might have to try this with a different color if I ever buy myself an 11.

I did it by not following the directions at all.

1. Buy RIT Sunshine Orange Liquid Dye.
2. Lightly sand the micrata. Why? I don't know. It seemed like a good idea.
3. Get a paper towel and apply some RIT to it. Rub it all over the micarta. Let it dry.
4. Sand it a little more.
5. Apply a little more. Let dry.
6. Read some other threads.
7. By read, I mean pick out the part that said something about soaking it in hot salt water with some dye for 24 hours.
8. Heat up some water. Add a splash of dye. Drop in the scales.
9. Get impatient and take them out after about an hour. Run under cold water.
10. Dry.
11. Done.

If I were to do it over again (and I likely will with my fill sized micarta grips), I'd likely skip right to the soaking part. Concentrated RIT might have been a little much, but I still like the way it turned out.

And, yes. The color is fairly true. Maybe a little washed out in the pic. It really is a crap camera.

That's awesome. I love how when you don't follow directions you can sometimes get an end product much better than you expected.

Something deep inside this 3rd generation Longhorn just loves that burnt orange....

I pretty much bleed orange, so if I were to accidentally cut myself, it wouldn't even blemish the micarta scales.

So at least I would have that going for me.

i'm going to rip this idea off just like WIMC, b/c that looks great. except that not only am i impatient like you, i'm also lazy. so i'll probably just soak it, but not as long as i should.

now let's see, orange and awesome looking, or hot gay pink tiger stripe?

Thanks for all the compliments. I just had the knife outside while doing some chores. The scales look great in the sunlight. Much richer than the pic. I'm very happy with them.

I think the rub on RIT is what made them so rich and dark looking. I'm tempted to try just soaking with my full size scales, but now I just don't know...

I did just find a slab of G10 I bought a few years ago. Back then the idea was to make a set of scales for a BK7, but I measured wrong and got the wrong thickness. Turns out the piece would be perfect for about two or three sets of BK11 handles. Maybe even some BK14 scales, but I don't have any to use as a template.
