Orange Lanyard Saves the Day

A few days ago, I finally drilled and put a orange paracord lanyard on a olive drab handled Mora. Two day later, I was hopping a rock at the edge of a river, and the knife and kydex sheath bounced out of my pack's elastic side pocket. I've made this same little jump literally hundreds of times. This was the first I've lost anything. It took a few moments of examining the pack before I finally figured out what made the splash. The pool was four or five foot deep with big rocks and crevasses of unknown depth and the water was covered in tannin foam. After swooshing away the foam, I squinted and cupped my hands around my face and could just barely see a flash of orange through the dark water. The lanyard had snagged on a rock. I rolled up my sleeve and retrieved the knife. I've had the knife for months. Only two days earlier had I attached the lanyard. Sometimes Murphy loses. :)

A pic would be great. Was it a lanyard, or like a fob? I'd think the fob would be easier to see as its more paracord, where as the lanyard is like a small piece of paracord.

Seems you missed the point of the lanyard. Try attaching it to your gear. Then it won't matter what color it is;)

Excellent idea but a little late for me.

I wish I had put some orange tape or something on my olive green mora. I might have been able to find it last week.

Oh well, live and learn.

It's tomorrow.

It's not much of a picture, but here it is:

The knife is a 546-G. Stainless. $12. It used to have a substantial guard, until I removed it. The black tape is an experiment. It's "Magic Wrap," a rubbery tape that sticks to itself without adhesive (from Lowes— plumbing section.)

This knife is quickly becoming a favorite. It's very light. I like the steel, the blade length and shape. The handle fits my hand perfectly. I especially like the price. The only thing I don't like is the looks. There never was a pretty mora. :)

So far, the "experiment" with the Magic Wrap is working nicely. It's very grippy. Unfortunately, it also make a mora even uglier. :barf: :)

"Ugly"? Nah!!! For all things gear-related, i rely on the old addage, "*Function* is 'beauties' master" - and that is one very functional Mora!!!!

yup, i attach an orange paracord on all my knives, firesteel, water bottle, compass, car key, etc. when hiking.

I still use orange paracord to mark some things but I've been replacing it with Kelty Triptease. The reason why is that it's plenty strong (spectra core), comes in yellow for day time seeing and has reflective strips in it for finding at night with your headlamp. Do wish it was a little brighter for day time use, but so far so good.

The lanyard is just a little bit short. I did this on purpose. Generally, I don't like lanyards. They catch on things, and they get in the way if you're not using them. Also, I almost never use it around water, so the lanyard is annoying while rarely being needed. The one on this knife works as a lanyard if it needs to, but generally it is knotted into a figure 8 most of the time to make it smaller and a tiny bit less annoying. The main reason it it's there is because of the orange. Twice I left a M2000 behind, and was very happy to see it was still there the next day. A few weeks ago I was using this particular knife, laid it down for a few moments in some forest litter and realized immediately that sooner or later, I was going to lose it if I didn't add some color.

Almost all my outdoor gear blends into the environment. When I'm in the woods, I prefer not seeing other people. I assume those other people do not want to see me. So I try to accommodate them with earth tones. It's the polite thing to do. :)

When all your gear is green, gray and brown, it's easy to lose things. So I've been adding small flashes of color in the hope that I'll have to replace less of of my stuff.

Small things like flashlights all have yellow or red electrical tape on them. Some things have small flourecent red, orange or yellow cable ties attached.

I hardly ever lose things anymore.

It's been a long long time since I've read their Journal, but I think I remember that either Lewis or Clark left their compass (or sextant?) behind and lost at least a day or so in its retrieval. Knowing this brings me much comfort. :)
