You have just realized that you are lost/left behind /abondoned, etc. and its time for your previous survival training, which you played with on weekends, to be used for real.
We know we need water, shelter, food and whatnot. The question is how do you set your priorities on your tasks at hand?
Shelter first? Fire? Water? Grab a quick snack if you happen upon berries while looking for fire wood and its getting dark and colder?
Need some of those famous "General Rules" here....
Thanks
Bill

It would depend on the scenario, and the environment. In a cold, dry climate I'd go for fire first. In a cold, wet climate I'd go for shelter, then fire. In a really dry environment I would start trying to locate water, while keeping the others in mind (collecting tinder, keeping an eye peeled for food, etc.).

As far as scenarios, if we're talking SERE stuff, I'd concentrate on getting myself out of sight. In a normal, my-car-broke-down or I'm-lost-in-the-woods type stuff, I'd be thinking about signaling for help immediately. Not necessarily signaling right away, but figuring out how I would signal and when the best time would be. If we're talking EOTWAWKI survivalist stuff, then I'd be worried about food/fire/shelter/water AND protecting myself (which comes up in any situation, but would be more important in the unlikely fall of civilization that some folks love to talk about).

Only a slight disagreement here. I believe the 1st priority is to assess your situation and assets, make yourself think before you react, or worse yet, panic. Once you've done a quick situational assessment, you're ready to tackle the tasks to be done in the correct order for your needs.

It's not the pace of life that concerns me, It's the sudden stop at the end.

His suggestion is to take a 'dump' and go from there...You have to check out his site!

SAR training here says that the VERY FIRST thing you do when you've just realised you are lost is sit down and have a cuppa/chocolate/whatever.

The biggest mistakes happen in those first few, panicked seconds when your brain is not functioning rationally. The slang term for it here in NZ is "bush fear".

Even a couple of minutes gives you time to calm down and start thinking rationally.

I was also intrigued when an SAR trainer told me that all SAR personnel carry gas stoves, and one of the first things they do when they find a lost person in the bush is brew up a cuppa. To a (conscious) victim that hot cup of tea is magic!

Unlikely? I hope so, but then again it may be getting closer than we think. Check out
