Saw they had they 1917 on sale for 85.80 so I thought wth. Got it today and it's in a plain black cardboard box with no info pictures or anything just a sticker on the side with the model info. Is this legit or do I need to return it.

I've seen them come in a plain cardboard brown colored box, and a plain black colored cardboard box with stickers on the end.

On a related issue, a few months ago I saw a bad review for a CS sword due to the grease covering the blade.

The reviewer misunderstood the purpose was to prevent rust between the factory and finally reaching the customer, and thought he had to keep it all on his sword, so he was mad that he had a sword he could not use and had to keep the grease all over the blade.

Yep, that's how my Viking sword came. Plain cardboard and slathered in grease.

I actually like the process of cleaning the gunk off these blades when I get them in such a way. It forces you to not only exam the entire blade and get to know it as you clean it, but it forces you to handle them with respect. Windlass makes some good stuff too. I have been super impressed.
That is the type of box that CS swords come in, and this knife, being made by Windlass like many of the CS swords, would likely come in such a box.
