My new 710 should be here tomorrow or the next day. Would it be a good idea to put a drop or two of oil on the pivot? I want to be able to open the knife by just flicking the thumb stud.

Congrats on the 710! It's one of my favorite BMs, I'm sure you'll love it. It's a great knife and carries small for it's size. You could always oil the pivot, but I find that all of my BMs are fast out of box, requiring no tuning at all. My 710 flies open when I use the thumb studs. Anyways, thanks for sharing and post pics if you can.

+1

Great knife, it has served me well over the years  Regarding the tuning, the axis mechanism is always a *little stiff on your first day.. The blade pivot will loosen with use (not a lot, just enough for you to become a serial flicker ;))

I've never had to oil my pivot (or put oil on BM in general).

A drop of oil wouldn't hurt but it should smooth out a bit on its own over time as you use the knife. My 710 had a bit of play when I first got it, but after adjusting the pivot screw where I wanted it and some Loctite, it's been perfect for a couple of years now.

Just opened the box. I'm going to really enjoy this knife. The blade is not centered, and I've read where people have fixed this themselves but I have no idea how. The blade on my 580SBK Barrage is also not centered, but this one is worse. I really don't want to send it back to Benchmade. It was a bit stiff upon opening, but I put a drop of oil on the pivot area. Now it opens much easier. The scales are a bit slippery, but not as bad as the Valox scales on my 580. I wouldn't mind upgrading the scales to something with a bit more texture. Overall, I'm very pleased. I really like the size and shape of the blade.

Congrats on a great knife. Two things I did that really improved mine were getting a parkerized clip from Benchmade (its free), and ordered standoffs to replace the back spacer with.

I would play with the pivot screw a bit to see if the centering improves. If not, there are a few good videos on YouTube that show how to fix it.

Whenever I get a new BM, I always take it apart and polish the washers. Then adjust the pivot screws. You'll find that to get the perfect balance between pivot smoothness and lockup, you may have to mess with the torque of the other screws on the body.

I adjusted the screws on the knife a couple of times and I did manage to get the blade a bit more towards center. Still not perfect, but I can live with it. I am diggin' this knife....

Btw, how do you polish the washers?

Try this:
With the knife closed.
I would losen all the screws including the clip screws
Now snug down on the pivot. Not real tight, just hand tight.
I then gently, but firmly, apply pressure to each side of the knife in opposite directions.
Left side up/right side down or Left side down/right side up; while at the same time seeing what combination gives you the desired results.
While holding the right effect, start tightening screws. If the tightening of one particular screw ruins the effect. Tighten this problem screw last.
Once all screws are tight, adjust pivot.

I have never felt the need to lube my knives. Once broken in they're all as smooth if not better than came out of the box. As for the most popular libation (for the knives...) something dry that won't gum or solidify pocket lint like Tuf-Glide would work better than solvents like WD-40.

And Keyman's advice above is sound; would save many trips to Oregon City if followed.

I have had my M4 version for 2 weeks now and she is close to centered. It came leaning very much toward the right, but after a few adjustments to the pivot screw and a few hundred open and closing, she is almost center. I judge that she will be perfect in a few weeks.
I actually love the break in periods.
I used to get worried when a knife would come off center, but now I just relax and break em in.
Cheers
