Ordered a KMG today!

Congrats brother! I got my GIB today and was happy as a puppy with 2 peckers :) Very excited to have a 2x72 in the shop!

Let me know how you like the GIB I have think of pulling the trigger on one of those for a while now.

I have not got a motor yet. Still trying to find one cheap. If I dont find one soon I'll probably just go to TSC. Can't decide between 1.5 hp and 2 hp.

I went with a 1.5 hp single phase TEFC 3600 rpm from Wayne Coe: I figured with this being my first real grinder I would go with the best motor I can get right now. If only my landlord would let me run 220 in the shop... Then I'd save up a little longer and get a 2HP w/ VFD...

amcardon. Is there a reason you went with the 3600 rpm motor rather than the 1725 rpm one?

I have a TEFC 3600 rpm 1.5HP 3 phase for my GIB, and am waiting on my Teco FM50-202-C VFD to come in so I can finish my build and get it running. I am lucky my landlord lets me do pretty much what I want, within reason that is

There is no substitute for horse power. Two is good three will put a smile on your face.
A belt grinder that can not be stalled out makes the grinding process a lot more fun.

I got my 1.5HP for $50 delivered to my door so even if it is a little soft the price was right:D When I feel the need for a bit more power I can bump up to a 2ph and turn the 1.5 into something else and use a 3 position switch to go between on the VFD like some of the others have done here

Look at that, he is already planning the second grinder BOG

Someone has a tag-line, - just one more piece of equipment away from total contentment.

I was thinking more on the lines of a buffer set up to be truthful:o but that is a few years down the line, well maybe next winter, I still have to convert the garage into a workable shop this summer. That means electricity, insulation and heat.

Because that's what Wayne talked me into... He said if I was rolling with a VFD setup then go with slower speed but since this will be a single speed grinder (for now) then he suggested a higher rpm motor. I have every intention of building another GIB at some point, with a 2hp motor and vfd, this is just to get me by for now.

Most who build direct drive grinders use 3600rpm motors, those who build indirect drive grinders (KMG) usually use 1800rpm motors.
