Ordered a minigriptilian. Should I cancel?

I ordered a minigriptilian Friday. Black, 50/50 serrated, hole instead of thumbstud, standard 440C model.

Now I'm thinking about cancelling it though and getting one of these two knives that have recently caught my eye--the Benchmade 960 Osbourne and the SFM16.

(By the way, I definitely prefer the 960 to the minigrip, if only on aesthetics and D2 steel, but is it worth 2x+ the price? The minigrip is 60 dollars here, the 960 is 120 and an SFM16 I'd have to order...but probably ~55)

What do you guys think?

That's easy - buy both ... :D :D :D

Order the mini-grip in D2 from Cabellas....under $ 70. It's absolutely my favorite EDC and mine is a plain blade (you can order it in plain or combo) as I see no need whatsoever for the Combo.

Rather than cancel, I would try and change the order from part serrated to plain edge. IMHO a combo edge on a blade that small is virtually useless, (althought I know there are people who like them), but I have a 555 mini grip and it's an EXCELLENT small knife. If you can afford it get the larger one you like and keep the mini grip for your shirt pocket.

Should you cancel your griptilian and get a 960 instead? If you like it better and are willing to pay twice as much. If you just want the better steel, get the Cabelas D2 griptilian.

Should you get an M16 instead? No.

I agree with Tim, I carry a Griptillian (550) for work EDC, standard model 440c,with hole, and it's a great knife for the money. Again, go with the plain edge. ;)
I have herd alot of positive chatter about the D2 model from Cabelas. So either way, I dont think you can go wrong.

I thought you could only get the D2 minigrip in black-blade though?

I prefer half and half at this point in my life. I never use the first inch of my blade (closest to hilt) so I'd like to have the serrations there if I need them. The 960 comes only in straight edge though, as far as I can tell, so if I get it, it will not be combo.

As for the M16, I already own one, but I have a normal 3 inch spearpoint M16. I absolutely adore this knife, so I'm definitely thinking about getting the 3.5 inch SFM16 in tanto. The M16 just looks and feels like so much higher quality than the grip. It also has a liner lock, which is becoming my new favorite locking system.

Could someone link to a place where I can see and maybe order the Cabela's?

Yeah, it comes with the black protective coating, like the M16SF does. Personally, I think the griptilian is a much better knife. You can only get it from Cabelas. www.cabelas.com

If you are going to go that route, why not get the M21 ?? I had the Tanto (M16) model, and found, me personaly ,have no use for a tanto point, or the partialy serated edge. I agree, the handle is quite nice.

I mean, do they have a website? There are no Cabelas stores in Waco for sure, and I'm pretty confident not even in Arlington, so that may mean they're out for me if I can't order online.

The D2 grip is in titanium nitride coating (same as M16s)? That's wayyyy different than black, what people are are telling me it is. And I love that dark shine, even if it impossible and a half to clean. I might be sold if it had a similar finish. On the other hand, if it has a gross mat-black finish, then it's a no.

Anyone have photos? I can't find them on google.

I found the website....took me awhile to get that Cabelas is with ONE l. It LOOKS like a mat black finish to me on the one photo they have, but owners of the D2 minigrip, you tell me--is it a glossy dark shine or just mat black?

As for the M21, it appears the blade tapers out after about half way and the tip is larger than the base. Is that accurate? I know I shouldn't care, but that style of blade (from the photos) is not attractive to me. I'm not a big tanto fan either though, to be fair. That's why I made my M16 spearpoint.

I wish CRKT would make something about AUS8 available though.

Mine's a little scuffed from sharpening with my Edge Pro but I believe that it was matte black when I first bought it. The beauty of the D2 is that I reprofiled it to 30 degrees with my Edge Pro and I've never done anything to it since except some light stropping occassionally....and it still shaves my arm.

Personally, I like the black coating as it goes well with the black scales.

Well, it's merely a preference of mine, I don't have anything technical against matte black.

Is there a reason, other than (in my opinion) the superior styling, that I would prefer a 960 over a minigrip?

The M21 is AUS-8 also, if I am not mistaken the M-16 are also. (Dont quote me on that though :) )

Sorry, my mistake, I meant something "above" AUS8. I'm hearing so many good things about D2 I'd really like to try that. I'm going to take probably another week and think about my finances before I settle on anything though.

Thanks for the help though

CPettersen is right, the M16's are AUS8. I always considered them crap until I held one yesterday. Now I don't think it's a bad knife, the lock-up on the one I saw was solid, and the back-up lock was pretty neat.

Yeah, I've been on a bit of a personal mission trying to prove their value lately. I love my M16/11K. Nonetheless, I've crossed the SFM16 off of my list...I mean, I already have something too similar to that....my collection is small enough to need more diversity. And I still own 0 spydercos and 0 benchmades. So I want to fix this. I'm trying to figure out what benchmade to order this week, (or to let my order stand), and whenever I can afford it I think I'm going to go for a spyderco ATR.
