I ordered a bunch of knife blanks, from a well known supplier, and saw that they carried some of the "Solingen" carbon steel blades. I've never seen them before, and added one to my order..

When it arrived, I noticed that the Solingen blade (and only the Solingen) had bits of surface rust in several places.. (

Is this normal??

Seeing as I live in Canada, it's a pain in a$$ to send something back to a store south of the border.

Should I call to complain??

Yes I would complain if it wont easily polish out. It is their fault maybe they will pay the shipping.

If the blade is not finished I wouldn't worry about it, because as you finish the blade the surface rust will disapear. If it is a finished blade blank, I would be more concerned, although if it is just surface rust it should come off pretty easily with some hand sanding of the blade, or even some flitz. If the blade is pitted I would definately send the blade back. But keep in mind with high carbon steel rust is to be expected, unless the blade is cared for very well. Most of the time the rust doesn't effect the performance of the blade.

as said
is it finished? I assume not, being called a blank.
so you just finish it.
if it's a finished blade and sold as one, then send it back.

There's a little trick I learned from a draftman working with tool steel fixtures for surface rust. If the rust is just surface rust or blooms, a pink pearl eraser will clean up the rust without much of a mar on the metal. I use this for my finger prints on guns when careless enough to miss a spot when wiping them down to put them away.

If it's beyond that and a finished blade, YES, work out a return.

It has been my experience with several different knife suppliers that if my order showed up either incomplete, damaged or in any way unsatisfactory, they bent over backwards to make sure I was satisfied as a customer.

And I'm no haggler...I just called them and asked for help.

I say give it a shot. Don't call up demanding a refund. Just call and talk to somebody - work it out. You'll end up happier that way anyway.

If you call and they say "Oh, well every Solingen blade we've sent to Canada shows up rusted"...well, at least you know you've got company!
