Just ordered a Manix 2 and a Native 5. Anything to know about break in or anything like that?

congrats on getting bitten by the Spyderco bug! I have the Manix 2, it takes a little while to break in the ball lock, not sure if it's the lock itself or just getting the hang of one-handing the close ... maybe a bit of both. the open is smooth and fast right from the get-go if you want to use the middle-finger flick method.

the only thing you need to know about the Native 5 is after you get your 1st. you will want another.

Great knife

I have no experiences with the steels. I've read a few threads on them but how to they perform on these specific knives?

Great choices to start! The the Native is a great knife, and you'll definitely want more than one. I bought two in one week... The Manix and the Native have equally gorgeous ergos, and the ffg leaf blades with full bellies are crazy good slicers.

I didn't have an extensive amount of experience with either S30V or S35VN before picking up either of these. But so far I've been impressed. They both take razor sharp edges and hold them well. Even cutting against a cutting board or ceramic plate, they've done well for me. All it's taken is a few strops to put it back to shaving sharp.

Anyone have the Manix in bd1 that's what mine will be. I got the lightweights of both versions. Usually weight isn't a huge deal to me but I wanted to try something lighter. These two together weigh half of what the current two knives I carry do

And what kind of pivot systems do these two ride on. I was a little whimsy and didn't research as much as I usually would

There's some discussion in older threads about the BD-1 steel:

also, I believe the Everyday Commentary guy reviewed the Manix 2 in the lightweight BD-1 version
