Whats up guys, just ordered my first Fatboy http://www.maxpedition.com/catalog/full_jpg/cat_page_12.htm

Looks great, got it in black, will come in handy and knife shows and meetings, can't want to get it. I let you guys know what I think when it arrives.

Anyone else have one?

Also I ordered from TAD, it didnt say they were on backorder or out of stock so is it safe to say that they have them available?

TAD Gear gets them in all the time. If they don't have it now, its already on order I'm sure.

I have one, and my g/f has one too. They are great bags! It won't take you long to fill it up!

Have two. And a Thermite, Proteus, Condor, Vulture and a load of those little side bags. Watch out for the little plastic disc that draws the top cover tight. I lost mine aout two weeks after I got it.

Cool, thanks for the heads up.

Tony,

How do you like the Proteus? Would it be a good gear bag for a vehicle?

So what do you guys do with these things? What are their main purpose? I love the looks of them, but I don't see a practical purpose for them (for me.) Are these worn mostly in large cities where you have to do a lot of walking with all your stuff?

C'mon, gimme some justification for buying one. :D

I don't use it too much because I can't put a full sized book or full sized headphones in it. Just needed it a little bigger :(

Oh, I don't disagree that it will hold plenty, but where do you wear it? I live in Springfield, Mo so I drive everywhere I go. My wallet goes in my back pocket, cellphone in one pocket of the work slacks and keys and knife in the other. I guess me and that bag weren't meant to be. :grumpy: :( :D

What? Is that all you carry? Don't we have some kind of screening process to let folks into this forum? :) :)

Seriously, if that's all you carry, you don't need a Fatboy. For me, my main use for the Fatboy is as a "daddy bag" -- it will carry diapers and wipes, drinks for both kids, a toy or two, cleaning cloth, snacks, PDA, cell phone, flashlight, water bottle for me (in small roly poly), keys, etc. If I'm not carrying the kids' stuff, I can usually get away with a fanny pack instead of the fatboy. Also, during the winter, I can normally fit all the stuff into a ScotteVest, so I rarely carry the Fatboy then, either.

I had a fatboy, thought it was cool, but felt the strap was just a bit too wide for comfortable carry. I prefer the proteus versipack.

Ditto on the flying disc for tightening the water repellent collar on the main pouch. Mine went spinning off after about a week, about a week later I found it in the main pocket and it snapped right back into place. Hasnt flown off agian but beware

The fatboy is a seriously good article for carrying around all those things that you generally either leave in the car or do without, if you don't have a carryall.

Particularly if you are on the tourist trails.

I like to walk through cities and towns to discover all those unusual spots that are never on the maps and can't be seen from a vehicle, and the fatboy is the ideal size for all the bits and pieces that won't fit your pockets, but make a day strolling about a much better experience.

Sunglasses, tissues, chapstick, water bottle, camera and accessories, snack food, spare change, sunscreen, wipes, repellant, maps, brochures, timetables, etc etc.

And, of course, all your personal "survival" items, including the mandatory EDC knife. I won't list these all again, other threads have covered this sort of stuff.

The fatboy is the best item I have ever had for this purpose.
Worth its price ten times over.

It's a great bag, provided you remember that it's a tubular bag, so wide and square things don't fit in it very well. Works great as a tool bag.

Just got it and I love it.... very versital, can hold pretty much anything I would want to carry with me on a daily basis...

Now I want a thermite too...

I don't usually wear mine, but it's great for having a bunch of your favorite gear in one place, and where you can easily take it all with you if desired.
Mine stays in my truck, most of the time. It may go in with me to work, and hung in a convenient place, into a friend's house, and tossed on a chair, on my buddy's boat, in someone else's vehicle if we're going somewhere for the day, or on my person while on vacation.
I try to keep only stuff that gets used regularly, along with a few favorite toys, and a few "just in case" items.
Surefire L4, and Z3 w/SRTH, spare carrier with 123s, and a spare lamp assembly
Victorinox Hiker
LM ST200, and Micra
Steiner 8x22 binoculars
digital camera
small first aid kit, plus Visine, antacids, chapstick, stuff like that
ti spork (bought it for the heck of it, comes in handy more than I expected)
antibacterial soap
7" Knipex Cobra (think channel lock with locking adjustments)
pens, Sharpie, notebook
clip for the cell phone
spare keys
Sometimes a fixed blade, or ASP baton with the end of either sticking out of the large zippered compartment, maybe a AM/FM radio with headphones, or hands free set for my cell phone, all depending on where I'm going, what I'm doing. For instance, the Z3T gets switched for a tube of sunblock at the beach.
Versatile and convenient. That's what I like about it.

I'm thinking of getting an H1 or H3 to keep in my BoB, with the work essentials - Leatherman, tools, etc, to carry on my belt at work.

I bought one a while back but found I didn't carry it much, mostly just left it in the trunk. Carrying a "man purse" seemed a little embarassing to me.

Then I started using it as a bike bag, and found it works great! If you loop it over one shoulder and your neck, it's very comfortable and with that big padded loop, it doesn't shift around. It works like a bike messenger bag.

I usually go biking in the early morning for a workout, riding the roads into a desert area near my house then going off road for about a 30 to 60 minute ride. I wanted to have some emergency equipment (I've gotten a couple of flat tires from cactus thorns and such,), and got tired of emptying and refilling my Jansport daypack, which I use as a gym bag and is full of gym stuff. Now I use the Fatboy as a dedicated bike pack, I just hang it up in the garage with my bike and it is ready to go.

In it I keep:

Wrench
Tire shims
Spare Green Slime inner tube
Patch kit
Small road rash kit
Several quarters
$20 bill
ID and emergency contact #s/blood type
Cell phone
Surefire 6P
Garage Door opener
Bike lock
Airweight ASP baton
Gerber multi-tool
Small Crank Brothers pump
Tire Gauge
Spyderco Delica
Oakleys (usually I start out riding when it is dark, and sometimes have the rising sun in my eyes on the trip back)
Energy Gu gel
Pen
Chapstick
Small rag

I don't normally ride with a Walkman or iPod (with 3 kids, I value the moments of silence in my life), but if I did one would fit very nicely in there as well.

I will sometimes take a larger daypack if I plan to pick up something at the store on the way back (Fitness Tip: if you want your better half to support your early morning bike rides, stop at Starbucks on the way back and grab some almond croissants or cranberry scones to awaken her).
