Well after much deliberation and reading of other posts/reviews I ordered a DMT aligner today. I also got the extra course stone that I hoping to be able to use to put the edges on my hand made knives. I can't wait to try it out.

On your handmade knives you should always first grind your edge out with a grinder or a belt sander. The XXC won't grind you a new edge ( it will just take alot of time.)

NO, NO, NO.

The aligner will work fine don't risk damaging you blade with powered sharpening tools. Even though he doesn't have the XXC The XXC is the coarsest and one of the fastest methods for removing steel, fast enough to be almost comparable to a belt sander.

I don't have a belt grinder at the moment. if the extra course isn't course enough I'll just buy the xxcourse

In my first read of you post I didn't realize they were YOUR customs that needed the edge, unless I'm still not reading that right? You will need a coarser stone if that's the case.

I don't think it should take too long...I had to reprofile the edge on my VG-10 Spyderco...took the edge down to a flat profile on a slow speed grinder, then just used a coarse diamond stone from lanksy and went to town, only took about 10 minutes on each side to get it to a good edge and make a burr.

good to hear. My Endura is VG-10 as well. I have yet to reprofile it but I did have to put it to the course stone for quite some time to get out a nick in the blade

Reprofiled my D4 with the coarse DMT, took considerably less time than either my Native or my Becker/Camillus BK11 is taking. In fact, those are going so slow I am about to pick up an X-coarse stone!

I recently ordered one as well. Looking forward to hearing about your results on your knives.

I received the sharpener yesterday. I sharpened my EDC so far and it worked very slick. I'm going to try it out on a few kitchen knives and my hunter and see how that goes.
