Would you go for S30V ot Talonite? From what I hear S30V will take a sharper edge, but Talonite is absolutely rust proof and seems to have a magic all it's own. I have a couple S30V knives and love them but have no experience with Talonite.

What are the positives and negatives on these two?

i dont think S30V will get any sharper than talonite (with identical grinds) my ralph maxx w/a talonite blade is plenty sharp, either steel is good, i know talonite is lots higher than S30V, the only neg i have heard about talonite is it doesnt have the ability to bend it breaks, havent tried this theory out on mine though lol

jmxcpter,

What do you want to do with the knife?

SIFU1A,

It takes lots of effort to break a steel or Talonite blade. If you are bending Talonite to the point where it breaks, you should have used a pry bar. ;)

As Chuck said, it depends on what you'll be using it for. I have no experience with Talonite myself, but from what I've read, it has a tendency to deform when you hit hard materials. Any search for Talonite should turn up lots and lots of information on the subject.

Unless you need complete and utter stainlessness in a harsh environment, I'd go with S30V. I've tested talonite quite a bit, and it is not nearly as tough as S30V. Talonite has quite a tendency to chip, rip and break under moderate to heavy use. More so than most stainless steels. It can also be a booger to sharpen at times. I'd use talonite for a bird&trout knife or a dedicated box cutter, but certainly not for something like a camp knife. I'm not saying that talonite doesn't have its strong points, but it shouldn't be used where the blade may come into contact with any hard surface.

Under most circumstances, S30V is more than stainless enough for the job.

I agree with Buzzbait. I have used Talonite and S30V extensively and I would definetly go for the S30V. The only way I would use Talonite again would be if I needed something that was absolutely stainless.
