Ordering a waxed sheath

I've had a Randall bowie on order for a couple of years. It should be arriving early 2009. I was thinking as this knife will be a user that it would be a good idea to get it waxed to preserve the leather better. I will use the knife on expeditions. Does Randall include waxing sheaths in their options? How much would they add on to the price? I am buying from a dealer but would like to get info here before I make a decision. The only downside I see with waxing a sheath is that they use beeswax in the mixture and I hope it won't attract ants to the sheath. Ants here in Brazil are known to eat all sorts of things and I hope they won't get an apetite for a waxed sheath. It's a known fact when Theodore Roosevelt came down to the Amazon ants ate his red underwear. Cheers, Alex. And thanks for any answers.

Sheaths from Randall aren't waxed unless requested with the original order. Currently, Randall isn't even taking orders for replacement sheaths. Also, any changes to your order may cause more delay. Your best bet is to take delivery "as is" and treat the sheath like most would do in your region. Don't use oil though. It will soften the leather too much for a knife sheath. Eventually, the elements will get to even the toughest leather in your region. You may want to ask for suggestions in the RAT forum. Those guys have routinely used their knives in South America.

I know. Talk to your dealer who can talk with the folks at Randall. Maybe they can work something out.

In the past, I almost always ordered my replacement sheaths as waxed versions for two reasons...

They wear better, in that they don't stain easily; and, typically, waxed replacement sheaths were 'W' stamped to indicate waxed, but not stamped 'R', denoting Replacement...the theory here being that 'original' sheaths were potentially more valuable on the secondary market than R stamped replacement versions...

I received an email from Sullivan's a few days back stating that my order for waxed sheaths would be processed once my knives returned from the Randall Shop (boxed and ready for return shipment at the time of Sullivan's fire back in June, four of my Randall knives were water soaked and needed to be refurbished by RMK) - in the email, it was stated that the sheaths in my order would be stamped both 'W' and 'R'...

Alas, all good things must come to an end...still, damn nice sheaths, I'm keeping the order in place as is...
