I'm wondering what is the advantage of ordering straight from SOG? I'm looking at the Recon Bowie and prices from SOG authorized dealers and would expect the best of the best if ordered directly from SOG since they are priced about 30% or more higher.

I wouldn't guess that to be so.

For example, I used to do a lot of wine tasting in California. One day, at my favorite winery, I was going to buy a bottle but noticed it was much more expensive than I could get at my local wine store.
I asked the saleslady why the wine cost more and she said, "Because here at the winery the owner has to pay my salary to help in the tasting room."

So buying at the source doesn't always mean better pricing.

Cheers,

Carl

p.s. In another thread, "Factory Seconds" were mentioned. I bought my Recon Bowie as a factory second. Definitely one of my most-favorite SOG knife, AND most definitely has the best lines of most any knife out there. IMHO of course.

No advantage. I just received a Team Leader in Durotech from Savson. $150 vs. $260 on the SOG sight!

A lot of company's wont sell cheaper than a dealer because they have extensive dealer networks and need to protect them. One of my clients at work imports tables and chairs from China for about $10 a piece. Major department stores buy them from him and sell them for about $300 a piece (he charges maybe $60 a piece for example..he carries a lot of different stock ofcourse). Anyway, he told me that a retail buyer came to his warehouse to buy one. He offered it to the retail buyer for $500. The guy said he can get it for $300 at the department store so my client told him to hurry over there and grab the bargain :) ....point of story is that he hates to deal with retail customers and aims to protect his buyers, who don't buy one piece of furniture off him, they by 1000 pieces. Not saying this is the case with SOG though but if it was it would make sense.

Maybe I'm wrong but I got the impression from the original poster he was asking if he would get some added value if he ordered directly from SOG. Like really excellent service and shipping or almost a handpicked knife. But I'm in concurrence with everyone else even if this is the case that he would get comparable service and products from SOG as any other dealer but they are protecting their dealers and not competing with them.

Actually JTC I think you are right..he is asking if he would get a better blade (or handpicked one) if he got it straight from SOG and paid more. I guess only they could answer that.

Very much doubt so, why would they (SOG) sell the individule consumer better piece and leave the bad ones for their wholeseller, who probably accounts for 99% of their business?

If they want to merely protect their dealers than they don't have to sell from their own website. Like I mentioned in another thread, it is to give the impression that these knives are in the same class as such knives as Randall Made Knives. For example, A Randall Made Knife (Model #14 Attack Bowie) straight from the factory is $340. The SOG Recon Bowie is $310 through the SOG website. Except the Randall knife is ready for immediate shipment at about $100 over the factory's price through dealers and third parties while the SOG knife is about $100 less through a dealer and so forth. Thus, if I purchased a blade directly from SOG then I want the best blade and not the same thing sent to dealers for resale, which I can purchase for $100 to $150 less. I wouldn't mind purchasing straight from SOG but I want more information than I'm getting just the same old knife some Ebay store is selling.
