Just got the catalog in, will be my first time ordering. What do folks think of the CDT (cut-down tang) #15 vs the regular #15? Also, since it says one knife per household every 3 months, does that mean I should copy the order form, wait three months and send in my next order? I'd also like to hear people's thoughts on stainless vs carbon blades. Oh, and what's the wait time these days for delivery? Thanks

Bali,

The current waiting period for a newly ordered Randall Knife through the Randall Shop is somewhere between 54 and 58 months (depending on which source is being quoted)...4 1/2 years from now, the number of knives orderable per month may have come back down to a more reasonable 'one knife every other month'...or not ;)

Hi:

The CDT allows you many more handle options. A lot of people have made some sweet looking hunting knives out of #15 CDT's using standard wood, stag or micarta handles and standard single hilts.

If you sent an order in today and you want another knife 3 months after you get the first one I would send the specs in for the second one exactly 3 months after the first; if you want one 6 months after the first, I'd wait 5-6 months after sending in the specs for the first one. You can copy the order form or request a new catalog from Randall.

Your catalog should have the current delivery date stamped on the back, but I believe the delivery time is 56 months or so.

S/S or 01?
You will get many different reasons and views on this one and none will be wrong.

Here's my opinion:

If you want a knife strictly for collecting go S/S and you wont have to worry too much about it spotting.

If you want a knife to use you can go either way. Some say the carbon is better for a user because it sharpens easier and holds a better edge and I tend to agree. BUT with a little practice and a good stone the SS will sharpen just as well. As for a user the carbon will stain but to me it actually adds to the looks; sort of like a new pair of jeans, boots or cast iron skillet just don't look or feel right until they get used a few times. If you don't mind the staining or spotting go carbon, if you want your used knife to look new all the time go SS. I've always thought that a well used knife looks funny as the handle and sheath begin to show wear but the blade looks brand new.

4 and 1/2 years, ikes!! Can I go through a dealer, pay a little more, still be able to oder the configuration I want and get it sooner? What are some good dealers for this sort of thing that don't overcharge?

Yes, you can order from a dealer and usually get it sooner. I order from Greg Gutcher at Sullivan's Holster Shop, the maker of Randall Sheaths. His orders are out a little over two years and he currently sells for catalog prices (at the time the knife is made, not today's catalog prices).

I've owned several cut down tangs. The tang is still about ¼ X ½ inch so it is no thin little stick tang. The CDT opens up many more handle options. I have a current order in with Sullivan's Holster right now. The order is a "page holder" in that he doesn't need the specifics (model #, options) till about 90 days prior to the month it is supposed to be made. I've got lot's of time to decide. ...but a Model #14 CDT is currently calling me!
