Has anybody had experience with both the Oregon Blademaker grinder and the Pheer ph427 grinder? Those are the only 2 variable speed grinders in my price range.

Thanks!

I haven't used a Pheer, and have only bought components from Oregon Tools, but I don't think of them as equivalent machines.

The Pheer is a good grinder from what I have heard and read. It is available as a turnkey setup with variable speed and well built. The extra $400 for VS over the basic setup is well worth it.

The 454 and 427 models differ based on the construction type. The higher priced 454 will be more versatile in the long run, as it allows tooling arms and rests to be changed and adjusted easily.

The OregonBladeMaker is a lesser unit, IMHO, and you have to add the motor, and accessories. You may spend less, but you get what you pay for.

Thanks, if I get the Oregon Blade Maker grinder I intend to purchase the 1 hp motor and VFD from them as well. It brings the total price to about the same as the Pheer ph427 1.5 hp but you still have to add a work rest and drive wheel. It then becomes more expensive and for only 1 HP vs. the ph427 1.5 HP.

Shipping may be a bit quicker with the Oregon Blade Maker unit though.

Anyway, I think you answered my question. Thanks again.

The Direct drive Pheer is a good machine. If you're already going for a grinder with a vfd, you should know that there is going to be a lot of metal dust flying around. So, either get a NEMA 4 vfd, keep a non enclosed vfd a distance away, or get an enclosure for it. Did you check into what an Esteem with a KB vfd and a 2hp motor would run you?

i use a Pheer 427 with a Vfd and im a big fan. Its pretty stable, it tracks well, and im a fan of the direct drive. I used a friends GIAB with a belt link up and it felt weaker to me.
